Job Purpose

The Rigging & Lifting Specialist shall be responsible for the planning, review, coordination, supervision, and assurance of all lifting and rigging activities associated with the project. The role ensures that lifting operations are executed safely and efficiently and in compliance with ADNOC requirements, applicable UAE regulations, project specifications, approved lifting procedures, and international standards.

The Specialist shall provide technical expertise for routine, non-routine, critical, and heavy lifting operations and shall ensure that lifting equipment, lifting accessories, personnel competency, and lifting plans meet project and HSE requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Review, assess, and approve lifting plans, rigging studies, method statements, risk assessments/JSA, and lifting procedures submitted by EPC Contractors and subcontractors.

Provide specialist technical input for critical lifts, heavy lifts, tandem lifts, engineered lifts, and complex lifting operations.

Review crane selection, configuration, capacity, load charts, lifting radius, boom length, counterweight arrangements, ground bearing pressure, outrigger loads, and crane positioning.

Verify calculations relating to load weight, centre of gravity (COG), sling angles, sling tensions, lifting points, spreader beams, shackles, lifting beams, and other rigging arrangements.

Review engineered lifting studies and ensure adequate safety factors are incorporated in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements.

Ensure lifting operations comply with ADNOC Codes of Practice, project HSE requirements, approved procedures, UAE regulations, and applicable international standards.

Review and verify certification and inspection status of cranes, lifting appliances, lifting accessories, rigging gear, and other lifting equipment.

Ensure cranes and lifting equipment have valid third-party inspection certificates and are suitable for the intended lifting operation.

Verify competency, certification, and authorization of Crane Operators, Riggers, Banksmen/Signalmen, Lifting Supervisors, Appointed Persons, and other lifting personnel.

Participate in pre-lift meetings, toolbox talks, constructability reviews, SIMOPS reviews, and Job Safety Analysis sessions for critical lifting activities.

Conduct site inspections and audits of lifting and rigging activities and identify unsafe conditions, non-compliances, or deviations from approved lifting plans.

Ensure proper establishment and control of lifting zones, exclusion zones, crane access, ground preparation, outrigger arrangements, and lifting paths.

Monitor lifting operations involving major equipment such as pressure vessels, columns, tanks, modules, structural steel, piping assemblies, rotating equipment, transformers, and packaged equipment.

Provide technical support during equipment erection, module installation, shutdown/turnaround activities, and major construction lifting operations.

Review lifting requirements during the engineering and construction planning stages and identify potential lifting constraints at an early stage.

Coordinate with Construction, HSE, Engineering, Structural, Mechanical, Logistics, Marine and Project Controls teams regarding lifting activities.

Review Contractor lifting equipment registers and ensure inspection, certification, colour coding, maintenance, and traceability requirements are maintained.

Ensure lifting accessories including wire ropes, slings, shackles, hooks, chain blocks, lever hoists, spreader beams, and lifting beams are inspected and properly maintained.

Monitor compliance with the project's Lifting Equipment Management System (LEMS) or equivalent lifting management procedure.

Participate in investigations of lifting-related incidents, near misses, dropped-object events, and equipment failures and recommend corrective/preventive actions.

Provide technical guidance and mentoring to lifting supervisors, rigging teams, and construction personnel.

Support project management in resolving technical and HSE issues related to lifting operations.

Maintain records of lifting plan reviews, inspections, audits, observations, certifications, and corrective actions.

Ensure lessons learned and lifting-related best practices are communicated and implemented across the project.

Min. Qualifications & Experience

A bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering or equivalent from an accredited university with a minimum of fifteen (15+) years of relevant experience in the Oil & Gas or Petrochemical industry

Must have at least five (5) years of experience in similar position in a mega Oil & Gas or Petrochemical projects.

ADNOC project experience is required

Offshore project experience is required

PMC experiences is required

Experience in FEED & EPC Phases is required.

Candidate should have done Crane assembly, disassembly and actual heavy lifting installation.

Must be an engineer first prior to being a lift superintendent or lift supervisor.

Should be able to work with AutoCAD to do how own quick lift sketches and checks. Visualize and Develop lift studies and methodologies.

Able to do and visualize preliminary lift rigging and tackle arrangement. Must be able to do preliminary tackle calculation to acquire preliminary capacities of slings required.

Experience

Minimum 10–15 years of relevant experience in lifting, rigging, heavy lifting, construction, or installation activities within the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Refinery, Offshore, or major industrial construction sector.

Significant experience in PMC/EPC projects involving major lifting and equipment erection activities.

Previous experience on ADNOC or similar major Middle East Oil & Gas projects is highly preferred.

Strong practical experience with mobile cranes, crawler cranes, tower cranes, gantry systems, strand jacks, and other heavy-lifting systems as applicable.

Experience in both onshore and/or offshore lifting operations will be an advantage.

Demonstrated experience reviewing and approving complex and critical lifting studies.

Technical Competencies

The candidate shall have strong knowledge of:

Crane load charts and crane configuration.

Rigging calculations and sling tension calculations.

Centre of Gravity (COG) determination.

Load distribution and lifting point calculations.

Ground Bearing Pressure (GBP) and outrigger loading.

Crane stability and lifting radius requirements.

Heavy and critical lifting methodologies.

Tandem and multiple-crane lifting operations.

Lifting beams, spreader beams, shackles, slings, and rigging accessories.

Lifting equipment inspection and certification requirements.

Dropped Object Prevention requirements.

SIMOPS and lifting-related risk management.

PTW, JSA/TRA, toolbox talks, and HSE management systems.

Relevant standards and recommended practices such as BS 7121, LOLER, PUWER, ASME B30 series, ISO standards and applicable ADNOC requirements.
