L3Harris in Brighton are part of our Release Systems & Antennas division operating in the Aerospace domain. For over 70 years, L3Harris has designed and developed industry-leading carriage and release systems for fighter, rotary-wing and unmanned platforms and we design, manufacture and test a large portion of our release systems portfolio in our Brighton facility which offers 48,500 square feet of manufacturing space. Our mission-critical release systems equipment is on most major airborne fighter platforms worldwide, including the F-35, along with other aircraft like the Gripen and Typhoon.

We are seeking a Systems Engineer with experience or exposure to safety engineering to support the development, integration, and verification of complex aerospace systems. The role will contribute to the definition of system requirements, system architecture, and integration activities while ensuring that safety considerations are embedded throughout the engineering lifecycle.

The successful candidate will work within a multi-disciplinary engineering team, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and test engineers to deliver robust and compliant aerospace systems.

What the role will involve

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

Systems Engineering

Support the development and management of system requirements, ensuring traceability from customer needs through to verification.

Assist in defining system architecture and interfaces across mechanical, electrical, and software elements.

Contribute to system integration, verification, and validation activities.

Participate in design reviews including SRR, PDR, CDR and test readiness reviews.

Maintain engineering documentation including requirements, interface definitions, and verification plans.

Safety Engineering

Support the development of system safety artefacts in accordance with aerospace and defence standards.

Assist in performing hazard identification and analysis activities.

Contribute to safety assessments such as: Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

Support the development and maintenance of Hazard Logs.

Ensure safety requirements are captured, allocated, and verified within the system design.

Managing the Quarterly Airworthiness Review Board

Collaboration

Work closely with design, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams.

Support engagement with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

Assist in resolving technical issues and integration challenges.

What you’ll bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

Essential

Experience working within complex engineering systems (aerospace, defence, or high-integrity industries).

Understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle management.

Some experience or exposure to system safety engineering.

Experience managing technical documentation and requirements.

Ability to work within multi-disciplinary engineering teams.

Experience with safety standards such as: ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-882, Def Stan 00-056

Experience contributing to hazard analyses (FMEA, FTA, FHA).

Desirable

Experience with requirements management

Understanding of reliability analyses

Knowledge of Reliasoft software tools

Aerospace or defence programme experience.

Qualifications:

Degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline with 6+ years of experience working within the Aerospace/Defence industry in the System Safety domain.

In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.

Personal Attributes

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work across disciplines and communicate complex technical information.

Detail-oriented with a focus on safety and system integrity.

Proactive and able to take ownership of tasks within a structured engineering process

Proficiency with MS Excel, and MS Office application software.
