Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We work with clients to plan, build, integrate and maintain a wide variety of civil infrastructure, from bridges to reservoirs, from metro tunnels to off-shore wind farms. Our technical teams address every aspect of civil engineering design, working in close collaboration with the full breadth of Arup’s other design and engineering disciplines.

The Opportunity

Arup’s Civil Engineering team is looking to recruit a Civil Engineer to join our growing Infrastructure team in the Manchester office, supporting the delivery of major data centre and electricity transmission projects across the UK. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to nationally significant infrastructure that underpins the UK’s digital economy and energy transition, working within a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.

You will be involved in the planning, design and delivery of complex civil engineering solutions for hyperscale data centres, grid reinforcement schemes, substations, transmission infrastructure and associated development works. These projects are at the forefront of investment in the UK and require innovative, sustainable and resilient engineering solutions.

We work across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design, construction support and project delivery. Our clients include major data centre developers and operators, utility providers, transmission network operators, contractors and public sector organisations. As part of Arup’s wider UK and global network, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with specialists across civil engineering, energy, digital, environmental and planning disciplines, helping to deliver some of the industry's most challenging and rewarding projects.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for someone with experience in civil engineering design who is passionate about delivering critical infrastructure and creating sustainable engineering solutions. We recognise that great engineers develop their expertise through different career paths and experiences, and we encourage applications from people whose experience may not align perfectly with every area listed below.

You may have experience in one or more of the following:

Site development and infrastructure design

Drainage and flood risk management

Earthworks and levels design

Utilities coordination and diversion planning

Highways and access design

Data centre infrastructure projects

Energy, utilities or transmission projects

Design management and multidisciplinary coordination

We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Whether you have worked in consultancy, contractor organisations, utility companies, the public sector or another related environment, we are interested in people who bring curiosity, enthusiasm and a collaborative mindset. If you are excited about the role but do not meet every requirement, we would still encourage you to apply.

At Arup, professional development is a core part of our culture. You will be supported through mentoring, structured development opportunities and exposure to major infrastructure programmes. We are committed to helping our people grow, whether that is through technical specialisation, project leadership, digital skills or chartership progression. We also recognise that career journeys are not always linear and support people at different stages of their professional development.

What you’ll be doing

Supporting the design and delivery of civil engineering solutions for data centre and electricity transmission infrastructure projects

Developing site layouts, drainage strategies, earthworks designs, access arrangements and utility coordination solutions

Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated and sustainable engineering designs

Producing technical designs, drawings, calculations and reports to a high standard

Engaging with clients, stakeholders and project teams to develop practical and innovative outcomes

Taking ownership of defined elements of projects, including checking the quality and accuracy of your work

Contributing to the continued development of digital engineering, BIM-led delivery and data-driven design approaches

What we are looking for

We are interested in candidates who can demonstrate a combination of the following skills:

A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline

Experience using design software such as Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, AutoCAD or similar packages

An interest in digital design, BIM and/or automation within engineering delivery

A proactive and adaptable approach to problem solving

Experience delivering site development, utilities, energy or major infrastructure projects

Progression toward or achievement of professional chartership (ICE or equivalent) would be advantageous

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application and for the duration of employment. Any offer made will be subject to satisfactory proof of immigration status.
