About the role

[What the role is]

Embark on an enriching career journey at the Environmental Health Institute (EHI), where you will play a hands-on role in both field and laboratory research. Areas of focus include (i) biosurveillance of urban small mammals (e.g., rats and mice) and their associated pathogens, and (ii) development of integrated rat control strategies.

[What you will be working on]

You will collaborate with stakeholders to translate scientific findings into policy and operations and contribute to shaping national environmental public health policies. As part of the EHI, you will have opportunities to grow not only as a scientist, but also in areas such as project management, innovation and technology development, and stakeholder engagement.

[What we are looking for]

Bachelor's or Master's degree in ecology, zoology, environmental science, veterinary science, or a related life sciences field

Experience in designing and conducting research projects, including molecular work and fieldwork

Knowledge of the biology, ecology, and field surveillance of urban small mammals and their associated pathogens

Willingness to carry out animal dissections

Basic proficiency in biostatistics and statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, or equivalent)

Ability to work with multiple stakeholders to support policy and operational outcomes

Strong organisational, analytical, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills

Able to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to changing priorities

Self-motivated, resourceful, and eager to learn

Prior experience with the safe handling and dissection of small mammals will be preferred

Interest in or aptitude for developing innovative technologies, engineering solutions, or AI-enabled tools applied to animal behaviour or ecology will be preferred

Track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications will be preferred

Valid Class 3 driver's licence with willingness to travel to field sites preferred (vehicle provided if available)
