About the role

Job Description

We are looking for a passionate Computing Engineer to join CERN's IT Storage and Data Management group (IT-SD). Our group enables large-scale data access for the laboratory, the Large Hadron Collider and CERN's broader experimental programme, managing more than one exabyte of storage in the CERN Data Centre.

You will join the CERNBox team, which provides cloud storage to the CERN community and is making CERNBox interoperable and deployable across European research infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Federation. You will package, test and validate the stack using Kubernetes and Helm for deployment across on-premises and public clouds, and contribute to Reva, its Go-based backend, by implementing the Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) protocol, an emerging IETF standard for interoperable cloud storage and data sharing across institutions.

If you are excited about cloud-native systems, open standards and building software adopted by research institutions worldwide, this is the place for you!

Your responsibilities

Develop and integrate backend software components.

Package and deploy interoperable services in distributed environments.

Support CERN community: you will join our operations team, troubleshooting incidents and supporting users.

Contribute your code, features and fixes back to the CERNBox open-source projects, working alongside a broader open-source community.

Work with partner institutions and research infrastructures across Europe to test, validate and refine these tools together.

Support users and partner teams as they adopt these tools, helping with troubleshooting and guidance.

Your profile

Experience, or a strong interest, in backend development and cloud-native deployment.

Enjoys troubleshooting, hands-on problem-solving, user support and service management.

Comfortable collaborating with external partners and international teams.

Curiosity about system integration and interoperability challenges.

Skills

Kubernetes and Helm chart development.

Backend software development, in particular Go.

Linux tech stack, administration and automation.

Nice to have: frontend development.

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.

By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Applicants without University degree are not eligible.

Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.
