About the role

Nau mai, haere mai ki Upoko ki te uru hauora.

Based at Wellington Regional Hospital

Start 31 August 2026

This is a non-training role and a good opportunity for someone wanting to know more about this specialty, with a view to potentially training in radiation oncology

You will be responsible for clinical management of patients in a fully supported training environment and be joining a team of 10 radiation oncologists and 7 trainee registrars.

Most of our patients are outpatients with a small number of inpatients, on average 5 per week. You will be responsible for managing the inpatients along with the other registrars and a ward based house officer.

You will attend outpatient clinics with a radiation oncologist to see new and follow up patients.

You will participate in an acute roster assessing patients receiving radiation treatment.

You will participate in an after-hours on call roster, including weekends till 11pm, a 1 in 8 rotation.

RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) Single-Employer Collective Agreements.

Mo to matou ropu - About our team

The Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre (WBCC) at Wellington Hospital serves patients from Wellington, Kapiti Coast, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Nelson/Marlborough, seeing over 1200 new radiation oncology patients per annum. All radiation treatment is delivered at Wellington Hospital. There are peripheral clinics at Hutt hospital, Masterton Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital, and Wairau Hospital. Wellington also offers supra-regional services for gynaecological brachytherapy.

The WBCC is an integrated department with medical oncology, haematology and palliative care. Multidisciplinary team meetings exist for all the major tumour types. The department has its own research unit to support participation in clinical trials. The radiation department has 3 Varian Linear Accelerators, a skin unit, a high dose brachytherapy suite, a wide-bore planning CT scanner, and utilises the Eclipse planning system. We offer gynaecology and prostate brachytherapy , stereotactic treatment for brain, lung and some palliative sites, and total body irradiation.
