About the Role

We are seeking a suitably qualified General Surgeon to join the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and Intra-Abdominal Transplant Service, part of the General Surgery and Trauma Service at Te Toka Tumai - Auckland, as an HPB Fellow. This is a full-time, fixed-term 12-month Fellowship commencing in February 2027.

Te Toka Tumai - Auckland is New Zealands largest hospital, providing a comprehensive range of tertiary HPB services with referrals received from across New Zealand. The HPB Service manages complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions and works closely with Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Intra-Abdominal Transplant, Oncology, Radiology (including Interventional Radiology), Trauma, Intensive Care and Endoscopy services.

The HPB team consists of six Senior Medical Officers, one Fellow, one Registrar, two House Officers and one Clinical Nurse Specialist, providing a supportive environment focused on high-quality patient care, education and professional development.

The Fellow will gain extensive exposure to complex HPB surgery, including elective and acute care, operative experience, multidisciplinary decision-making, teaching and research. Clinical activities include operating lists, outpatient clinics, participation in the General Surgery on-call roster, and weekly multidisciplinary meetings including Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB), Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), and Neuroendocrine Tumour (NET).

The fellowship provides experience across a broad HPB caseload, including liver resections and ablations, pancreatic surgery, complex biliary procedures, and opportunities to participate in selected liver transplant and donor procedures through collaboration with the transplant service.

Clinical research opportunities are available through the Department of Surgery and in collaboration with the University of Auckland. This fellowship provides a structured and progressive training programme tailored to the Fellows existing surgical skills and experience.

The role is primarily based at Auckland City Hospital; however, flexibility is required, as duties may include work across both hospital sites, including Greenlane Clinical Centre, to meet departmental service requirements.

About you: Important Skills

Ideally, you will be nearing completion of, or have recently completed, a General Surgery training programme recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or an equivalent international training body, and be seeking additional structured training in this subspecialty.
