Purpose
The Meat Manager is responsible for directing and coordinating all activities of the Meat Department to achieve sales, labor, customer service, food safety, inventory, and profitability goals. The Meat Manager leads department associates, maintains product quality and merchandising standards, and ensures compliance with all food safety and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development
Recruit, train, coach, and develop Meat Department associates.
Schedule associates to meet customer service and operational needs.
Provide ongoing performance feedback, coaching, and recognition.
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and operational excellence.
Develop associates for future advancement opportunities.
Customer Service
Ensure exceptional customer service is consistently delivered.
Assist customers with product selection, special orders, and preparation recommendations.
Resolve customer inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally.
Promote customer loyalty through outstanding service and product knowledge.
Department Operations
Oversee all daily Meat Department operations, including production, merchandising, inventory management, and replenishment.
Ensure displays, service cases, and self-service areas remain fully stocked and attractive.
Monitor product rotation and freshness to minimize shrink and maximize quality.
Maintain department cleanliness, organization, and presentation standards.
Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and promotional execution.
Product Quality & Food Safety
Ensure all meat products meet company quality standards.
Monitor freshness, handling, storage, and rotation procedures.
Maintain compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
Conduct regular inspections to ensure product integrity and department standards.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of department equipment.
Merchandising & Sales Growth
Execute merchandising programs and seasonal sales initiatives.
Maintain appealing product displays that drive sales and customer satisfaction.
Analyze sales performance and identify growth opportunities.
Support local merchandising efforts and special promotions.
Monitor inventory levels to maximize sales while minimizing waste.
Financial Management
Manage department labor, expenses, inventory, and shrink.
Monitor department financial performance and key performance indicators.
Develop and implement action plans to achieve sales and profit goals.
Ensure efficient scheduling and labor utilization practices.
Safety & Compliance
Maintain a safe working environment for associates and customers.
Ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Support loss prevention and shrink reduction programs.
Ensure associates follow proper safety procedures when operating equipment.
Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong leadership and associate development skills.
Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
Knowledge of meat cutting, merchandising, inventory control, and food safety practices.
Strong understanding of sanitation and regulatory compliance requirements.
Ability to analyze sales and operational reports.
Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Previous meat department or food retail experience.
Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
Knowledge of food safety and sanitation requirements.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams and achieve operational goals.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of meat cutting or meat merchandising training programs.
Previous Meat Manager experience.
Experience leading teams in a high-volume retail environment.
Food safety certification where applicable.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull products and equipment consistent with department operations.
Ability to work safely with knives, saws, grinders, slicers, and other meat department equipment.
Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Working Conditions
Retail grocery store environment.
Frequent exposure to refrigerated and freezer temperatures.
Regular handling of fresh meat products.
Frequent interaction with customers, associates, vendors, and company representatives.
Fast-paced environment requiring effective multitasking and attention to detail.
