Job Summary
The Engineering Manager will oversee a hybrid model mainframe engineering team focused on designing modernizing and supporting core enterprise applications using Cobol JCL CICS IBM Mainframe Utilities and relational databases such as Oracle and DB2. The role emphasizes robust delivery technical mentoring reliability performance and alignment to business outcomes for global stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Drive the planning and delivery of complex mainframe application enhancements using Cobol JCL CICS and IBM mainframe utilities to meet critical enterprise business goals
Coordinate cross functional efforts to analyze design and implement database solutions on Oracle and DB2 that ensure high performance scalability and data integrity
Guide the team in writing efficient SQL queries and stored procedures that optimize transaction throughput and minimize resource consumption across mainframe and distributed environments
Oversee incident investigation and problem resolution for production mainframe and database issues while ensuring clear communication with stakeholders and rapid restoration of services
Implement robust change management practices for JCL and Cobol components to reduce deployment risk and ensure consistent and traceable software releases
Establish coding standards and review practices for Cobol JCL and CICS artifacts that drive maintainability reusability and long term stability of business critical systems
Mentor engineers on mainframe tools IBM utilities and database design patterns to build deep technical capability within the team and support sustainable delivery
Collaborate with architecture and infrastructure teams to plan capacity performance tuning and modernization strategies for Oracle DB2 and mainframe workloads
Align day to day engineering activities with organizational objectives so that each release delivers measurable value to customers and supports the company mission in the market
Promote automated testing practices for Cobol and SQL components to improve quality reduce regressions and support confident and frequent deployments
Monitor key operational metrics such as batch performance CICS response times database utilization and defect trends to identify improvement opportunities and drive corrective actions
Coordinate with business analysts and product partners to translate functional requirements into detailed technical designs for mainframe and database solutions that address real user needs
Ensure adherence to security compliance and audit standards across all mainframe and database development activities to protect sensitive data and maintain regulatory readiness
Qualifications
Require a bachelors degree or equivalent experience in computer science information technology or a related field with strong exposure to enterprise systems engineering
Require eight to twelve years of hands on experience in mainframe development using Cobol JCL CICS and IBM mainframe utilities supporting large scale transactional applications
Require deep expertise in relational database technologies including Oracle and DB2 with strong skills in SQL query design optimization and troubleshooting
Require proven experience in designing and maintaining batch jobs and online transactions in mainframe environments with focus on stability performance and recoverability
Require experience working in hybrid delivery models that combine onsite and remote collaboration while maintaining effective communication in English as a primary language
Require strong problem solving skills and the ability to manage complex production incidents in a calm structured and outcome focused manner
Nice to have experience in mainframe modernization initiatives such as refactoring legacy Cobol applications integrating with APIs or migrating workloads to more modern platforms
Nice to have exposure to continuous integration and continuous delivery practices for mainframe and database components using enterprise automation toolsets
Nice to have experience in collaborating with global teams and stakeholders across multiple time zones to deliver high impact technology solutions that benefit customers and society
Certifications Required
Preferred certifications include IBM Certified System Administrator for z OS and Oracle Database certification or equivalent industry recognized credentials
