Perched atop Grouse Mountain, The Observatory is one of British Columbia’s most distinctive dining destinations, offering elevated cuisine, exceptional wines, and breathtaking views. We are seeking an experienced and passionate Restaurant Manager & Sommelier to lead our front-of-house operation, elevate the guest experience, and continue developing an award-worthy wine and beverage program.

JOB SUMMARY

As the Restaurant Manager & Sommelier, you will be responsible for the overall operation and success of The Observatory. You will lead service from the floor, coach and develop the front-of-house team, oversee financial performance, and manage all aspects of the restaurant’s wine and beverage program.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Guest Experience & Service Excellence

Lead service as an active floor manager and host during dinner service.

Deliver exceptional guest experiences and uphold premium dining standards.

Build relationships with guests, VIPs, members, and repeat visitors.

Drive sales through menu knowledge, upselling, and personalized recommendations.

Wine & Beverage Program

Lead all aspects of wine service in accordance with fine dining standards.

Curate, develop, and maintain an innovative and profitable wine list.

Champion British Columbia wines while showcasing leading producers from around the world.

Manage wine inventory, purchasing, storage, cellaring, and beverage cost controls.

Conduct staff wine education and tasting programs.

Leadership & Team Development

Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and mentor front-of-house team members.

Lead pre-shift meetings, wine education, and service workshops.

Manage performance, accountability, and professional development.

Operations & Financial Performance

Develop labour plans, scheduling, and productivity targets.

Manage reservations to maximize guest satisfaction and revenue.

Monitor sales, labour, inventory, and profitability metrics.

Ensure adequate inventory levels of wine, beverages, and operating supplies.

Resort Leadership

Act as evening Food & Beverage Duty Manager when required.

Provide operational leadership throughout Chalet food and beverage operations.

Support banquet events, wine dinners, VIP functions, and special events.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position proves direct supervision to the front of house team within The Observatory.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES

Minimum 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in upscale or fine dining restaurants.

Minimum 2 years of Sommelier experience.

Preferred WSET Level 3, Certified Sommelier, or equivalent certification.

Serving It Right certification.

Strong knowledge of wine, beverage costing, inventory management, and guest service excellence.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Hours of Operation are weather dependent. Due to the nature of the business, this position requires flexibility in terms of your work schedule. A variety of work schedules may include a variety of start times, including shifts on weekends and statutory holidays.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$70,000 to $80,000 annually
