A little more about your role
We will be strengthening our Mechanical offering by appointing a Mechanical Design Technician (Building Services). The ideal candidate will hold a B.Tech. Eng. (Mechanical), National Diploma (Mechanical Engineering) (NQF 6+), or equivalent qualification and have 5+ years of experience in the Building Services Consulting sector.
The successful candidate will combine BIM modelling, draughting and certain engineering design responsibilities and will work under the guidance of senior engineers while taking ownership of defined design and modelling packages.
The candidate will contribute to the delivery of multidisciplinary projects, taking responsibility for defined design packages while developing consulting, coordination, and client engagement skills under the guidance of senior engineers. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of designs across all project stages.
This role will involve the design, coordination and BIM modelling of multiple building services disciplines. Candidates must demonstrate competency in at least two of the following mechanical disciplines:
HVAC
Public Health / Wet Services
Medical Gas Systems
Mechanical Utilities
Fuel Systems
Vertical Transportation
Fire Engineering Services
You will:
Technical Expertise:
Able to perform Mechanical Services designs and calculations in accordance with applicable SANS standards and SANS 10400 requirements.
Able to perform Mechanical Services designs and calculations in accordance with EN/BS Standards.
Able to perform designs and calculations in accordance with IPS, UPC, NFPA, ASIB and other international standards applicable to the relevant discipline would be advantageous.
Demonstrated competency in the design and BIM modelling of at least two of the following Mechanical Services disciplines:
HVAC
Public Health / Wet Services
Medical Gas Systems
Mechanical Utilities
Fuel Systems
Vertical Transportation
Fire Engineering Services
Perform engineering calculations, equipment sizing, system layouts and technical assessments appropriate to the disciplines worked on.
Perform detailed BIM modelling, CAD drafting and multidisciplinary coordination using Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks and BIM360.
Ability to work independently on defined work packages
Manipulate and coordinate various digital file formats for BIM project delivery.
Assist with BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) and project BIM standards.
Develop equipment families and maintain project model quality.
Obtain supplier technical information and incorporate approved equipment into BIM models.
Perform clash detection reviews and assist in resolving coordination issues.

Project & Financial Management:
Assist lead engineers with the delivery of design packages, scope management and project coordination activities.
Assist with compiling tender documentation, BOQ’s, quantity take-offs, equipment schedules and project deliverables.
Assist senior engineers during construction administration and contractor engagement activities.
Participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings and design reviews

Apply logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
Make sound judgments and decisions using both deductive and inductive reasoning.
Use scientific principles to solve complex engineering problems.
Communication Skills:
Effectively convey information, both written and oral.
Possess excellent communication and technical report-writing skills.
Quality Assurance & Site Supervision:
Ensure quality control (QA/QC) throughout project stages.
Conduct site inspections and monitor construction progress
Review shop drawings, contractor submissions and RFIs under the guidance of senior engineers.
Assist in resolving site-related technical issues
Conduct BIM model audits and quality reviews.
Ensure model compliance with project BIM standards and WSP procedures.
B.Tech. Eng. (Mechanical Engineering), National Diploma (Mechanical Engineering) (NQF 6), or equivalent qualification.
Additional BIM, Revit or Autodesk certifications will be advantageous.
Must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical building services design and BIM modelling.
Experience related to Mechanical engineering , designs and construction monitoring on either or multiple of the following sectors will be advantageous:
Data Centres
Healthcare Facilities
Clean Rooms
Advanced Manufacturing
Must have a good understanding and working knowledge of Revit and BIM360
