South Riverdale Community Health Centre is a non-profit, multi-service organization that provides primary healthcare, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention primarily to people of East Toronto. The HR Generalist manages and supports confidential matters within the Human Resources function, focusing primarily on organizational benefit and wellness programs, services and initiatives. This position requires a hands-on individual who is skilled at engaging with others while managing sensitive employee information with a high degree of professionalism. In addition, this position will support the HR function in a generalist capacity, contributing to the overall success of the HR function. Working onsite is required.

Responsibilities:

Manage employee group benefits (Health, Dental, Life, AD&D and LTD), Employee Assistance Program, and retirement plan administration (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan “HOOPP” and RRSP)

Ensure eligible employee enrollments, waivers, transitions and updates related to changes in status, compensation, coverage, beneficiary, etc. occur in a timely manner adhering to applicable deadlines and documented as per policy and practice

Maintain up-to-date records for all plans

Conduct eligibility, participation and documentation audits as required

Provide employee orientation to benefit programs e.g. group benefits, EAP, pension plan

Stay up-to-date on benefit carrier plans and pension plan updates, communicating necessary information to all applicable employees

Manage end-to-end leave of absences, accommodations and return to work programs, including modified duties, ensuring consistency and alignment with organizational policies, collective agreement and legislation (Employment Standards Act, Human Rights, etc.)

Provide consultation to employees and managers providing guidance on leave processes, eligibility, pay implications, documentation and return‑to‑work expectations

Provide a high‑quality employee leave experience

Maintain regular communication with employees and managers throughout leaves, handling sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion

Manage relationships with benefit carriers and third‑party administrators to ensure service quality and timeliness of claims processing

Maintain applicable policies and procedures in consultation with the Sr. Manager Human Resources

Analyze leave data and trends to report on actionable insights on operational impact and risks, and to identify areas for process enhancements, policy updates and improved employee experience

Manage end-to-end WSIB cases including: meeting form submission deadlines, regular communication with employee, manager and WSIB case coordinators, development of return to work and modified duty programs, trend reporting, etc.

Partner closely with external consultants, providers and vendors

Liaise with Payroll for impacted employee benefit and leave related adjustments

Collaborate with HR team to ensure accuracy within systems e.g. HRIS

Collaborate with Operational Team i.e. IT/IM, Facilities, for offboarding (commencing leave) and onboarding (return from leave) processes

Coordinate employee ergonomic requests as per organizational practice

Develop and complete monthly, quarterly, annual and fiscal year end reporting and adjustments, and report on relevant HR metrics

Monitor and maintain occupational health and safety HR items

Resolve employee issues and concerns in consultation with the Sr. Manager Human Resources

Participate in grievance and arbitration processes as required by the Sr. Manager Human Resources

Participate in workplace investigations as required by the Sr. Manager Human Resources

Work with the Sr. Manager Human Resources to ensure Accreditation compliance

Ensure practices comply with applicable legislation i.e. ESA, OHSA, Human Rights Code, relevant provincial and federal laws, etc.

Research legislative matters and best practices

Participate in and lead HR initiatives and projects as assigned by the Sr. Manager Human Resources

Effectively engage with employees providing prompt and efficient response to employee questions and issues

Stay up to date on current trends and best practices related to HR

Assist in the planning and execution of HR programs and processes

Support the ongoing improvement of Human Resources systems by actively participating in process review, process improvement and process documentation discussions

Participate on agency committees/events as appropriate

Provide support and act as back up for other HR roles as needed

Assist with all other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the efficient operation of the organization

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in Human Resources Management, or related field of study

Minimum 5 years’ working experience in the field of Human Resources, including benefit and retirement plan administration

CHRP/CHRL designation or working towards

Experience working in a unionized environment preferred

Strong understanding of Human Resources best practices and employment legislation, with the ability to effectively apply them in the workplace

Understanding of labour relations and the application of collective agreements

Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications

Professional tact and diplomacy with the ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality

Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills

Friendly, welcoming, customer service mindset

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop reports and present findings

Sound judgement and problem-solving skills

Ability to be flexible and possess initiative

Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
