Are you passionate about inspiring learners through creativity and helping them build confidence through art? We’re looking for a creative and enthusiastic Art Teacher to join our team at HMP Birmingham, delivering engaging, hands-on learning which supports artistic development, self-expression and nurtures potential. If you can plan and deliver creative art sessions, adapt teaching to meet individual learner needs, assess progress, provide constructive feedback and create a positive learning environment, we would like to hear from you!

We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Birmingham, working as an Art Teacher. This position is offered on a permanent, full-time basis, working 37 hours per week.

Site Information

HMP Birmingham is situated in Winson Green, close to the centre of the city and is a category B prison for remand and sentenced adult males. The teams' aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe, and where causes of prison stress are minimised. The prison’s mission is to provide a secure, safe, and rehabilitative environment that encourages positive change and prepares inmates for a successful reintegration into society.

Role Responsibilities

You will need patience, passion, flexibility and understanding in your approach to our learners, who have ‘hit a bump in the road’ but want to learn and improve.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

Hold a teaching qualification and, where applicable, relevant subject specialist qualification - with a commitment to obtain the outstanding qualification within 12 months.

Hold a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.

Have industry/vocational experience or relevant qualifications in the subject specialism

Have experience creating stimulating, vibrant environments which are conducive to learning and motivational for learners

Have a good previous track record of achieving quality targets

Have willingness to engage with and produce accurate and timely reports

Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills

Have an ability to motivate and enthuse learners in the subject matter

Demonstrate good organisational skills to prioritise workload and meet deadlines/targets

Advocate for and engage consistently in positive team working
