About the role

About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Regional Building team in the West Midlands, supporting the delivery of the N1N2 Project in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key commercial role on a major Buildings and Infrastructure scheme delivered under an NEC contract, helping to drive commercial performance while ensuring the highest standards of quality and value.

We are looking for a commercially astute professional with a proven track record of managing project costs and maximising value throughout the project lifecycle. Whether your background is in Building, MEP, or a combination of both, you will bring the expertise needed to successfully manage commercial risk, optimise project outcomes, and support the delivery of complex construction projects.

As a senior member of the commercial team, you'll also have the opportunity to lead and mentor developing quantity surveyors, helping them progress towards professional qualification, while continuing to advance your own career within one of the UK's leading infrastructure and construction businesses. Ideally, you'll be professionally qualified or working towards Chartership with RICS, CIOB or ICES, with a strong commitment to ongoing professional development.

What you'll be doing

Managing all commercial aspects of the N1N2 project, ensuring costs are controlled, value is maximised, and project objectives are achieved.

Preparing, analysing, and negotiating activity schedules, resource schedules, subcontract packages, and tender documentation.

Administering NEC contracts, including the assessment and agreement of variations, compensation events, and change management processes.

Monitoring subcontractor performance, measuring progress, and ensuring commercial obligations are effectively managed.

Producing accurate commercial reports, cost forecasts, financial reconciliations, and progress updates for senior project stakeholders.

Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and key stakeholders, providing expert commercial support throughout the project lifecycle.

Reviewing and challenging project programmes to identify opportunities, risks, and potential impacts on cost and delivery.

Preparing, submitting, and negotiating claims where required, protecting Balfour Beatty's commercial position.

Supporting procurement activities, helping to develop commercial strategies and secure best value from the supply chain.

Driving compliance with Balfour Beatty's governance processes while embracing LEAN construction principles and digital tools to improve project performance.

Undertaking constructability and risk analyses to support successful project delivery.

Leading, mentoring, and developing junior commercial team members, fostering professional growth and supporting progression towards chartership and professional qualifications.

Who we're looking for

Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying (BSc, MSc or equivalent).

Professionally qualified, or working towards Chartership with RICS, CIOB or ICES.

Holder of a CSCS Professional Qualified Person Card (or able to obtain one).

Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within the building, infrastructure or MEP sectors.

Strong knowledge of NEC contracts and commercial management practices.

Experience managing project costs, forecasting, change control and subcontractor accounts.

Commercially astute with excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills.

Ability to lead, mentor and develop junior commercial team members.

Strong analytical, reporting and problem-solving capabilities with excellent attention to detail.

Committed to continuous professional development and maintaining industry best practice.
