The Environmental Manager is responsible for leading environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives across construction projects. The role ensures all environmental approvals, legislative requirements, and project environmental management plans are implemented and maintained, while supporting project delivery through effective risk management, monitoring, reporting, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement of environmental performance.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to lead environmental compliance, approvals, and sustainability performance on a major construction project. Reporting to the Project Director, you will be responsible for preparing, implementing, and maintaining the Project Environmental Management Plan while ensuring compliance with all environmental legislation, contractual obligations, approvals, and project requirements.

This role will work closely with project teams, clients, regulators, consultants, and subcontractors to proactively manage environmental risks, support project delivery, and drive a culture of environmental excellence across all construction activities.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the implementation and ongoing management of the project's Environmental Management Plan.

Ensure compliance with environmental approvals, licences, permits, contractual requirements, and relevant legislation.

Coordinate environmental inspections, monitoring programs, audits, testing, and reporting activities.

Manage environmental risks, incidents, non-conformances, and corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement.

Obtain and maintain required environmental approvals, including licence applications, consistency assessments, out-of-hours approvals, and early works permits.

Develop and implement erosion and sediment control measures and other environmental management initiatives.

Liaise with environmental authorities, clients, consultants, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to ensure compliance obligations are met.

Deliver environmental training, coaching, and mentoring to project personnel and subcontractors.

Support design and construction teams by identifying environmental requirements and practical solutions that minimise project impacts.

Maintain environmental management system certification requirements and provide regular performance reporting to project leadership.

Required Skills and Competencies

About You

Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or a related discipline.

Minimum 7 years' experience applying environmental management principles within construction, infrastructure, or civil projects.

Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, approvals, auditing processes, and compliance management.

Experience managing environmental incidents, investigations, reporting, and corrective actions.

Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.

Strong planning, organisational, and problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to risk management.
