Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

Why does the job exist?

The project director at the Office of Archaeological Studies carries out client-initiated projects from conception through completion of reporting. The position aids in completing fieldwork, analysis of artifacts, project management, producing deliverables, and supervises other archaeologists on staff.

How does it get done?

The project director designs, conducts, manages, and completes all types of archaeological field investigations including survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery. Completes artifact analysis for at least one category for archaeological investigations they oversee and collaborates with other division staff to complete additional analyses, as needed. Produces technical reports on the results of archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis, ensures final curation and disposition of archaeological collections, participates in office administration and activities, including public outreach and education opportunities, and directly supervises at least two (2) employees.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and seven (7) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eleven (11) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field and in an office setting. Late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Travel is required irregularly.
