What does the average day look like?

No two days are the same. One day you could be creating graphics for social media channels and producing artwork for digital signage seen across the railway network. The next, you could be developing creative campaigns and communication materials that engage colleagues and support internal communications initiatives.Another may focus on collaborating with stakeholders to develop creative concepts, managing external suppliers or refining designs based on feedback from senior communications colleagues.

You will regularly work across multiple projects and deadlines, ensuring high-quality outputs are delivered on time while maintaining consistency with Network Rail's visual identity. A key part of the role is balancing creativity with practical delivery, finding innovative solutions that meet communication objectives and engage different audiences. There is also a strong focus on continuous improvement and innovation. Whether experimenting with AI-powered design tools, exploring new creative approaches or benchmarking work against industry best practice, the role offers plenty of opportunity to bring fresh ideas and influence how visual communications are delivered.

A little bit about the team...

The role sits within Network Rail's Social and Digital team, part of the wider Communications function. This is a collaborative and creative environment where designers, content specialists and communications professionals work together to deliver engaging and impactful content across the organisation. The team supports a broad range of business areas, creating visual communications that reach audiences through multiple channels and platforms. Creativity, innovation and continuous improvement are highly valued, with team members encouraged to bring new ideas, challenge convention and help shape the future of visual communications across Network Rail.

Working closely with communications leaders, business stakeholders and external suppliers, you will have the opportunity to influence major campaigns and projects while contributing to a highly respected and professional creative team.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a talented and forward-thinking designer who combines strong technical skills with creativity, curiosity and a passion for visual storytelling. You will have experience in a graphic design role and be highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and Photoshop. Strong typography, composition and visual design skills are essential, alongside the ability to create impactful content across a range of channels and formats.

Beyond technical expertise, we are seeking someone who enjoys pushing creative boundaries and exploring new technologies. Experience with AI-powered creative tools, digital content creation or innovative design approaches will be highly valued. This role is not simply about maintaining existing ways of working; it is about identifying new opportunities to improve quality, efficiency and audience engagement. Strong communication skills are equally important. You will be comfortable working with stakeholders across the business, translating creative ideas into effective solutions and confidently presenting recommendations when required. Experience with video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects would be advantageous, although a willingness to develop these skills is equally welcome.
