About the Role

We are seeking a seasoned, hands-on SAP BW ABAP Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert at the intersection of SAP BW/4HANA, S/4HANA, and modern ABAP development disciplines. Candidates may be considered for any of the following role levels depending on experience and depth of expertise:

In this role, you will design, architect, and deliver robust SAP BW and ABAP-based data solutions across complex enterprise landscapes - spanning SAP BW/4HANA, SAP S/4HANA, SAP HANA, and legacy SAP ECC environments. You will build and optimize custom ABAP programs, BW data models, CDS Views, and extraction frameworks that power enterprise reporting, analytics, and data migration initiatives.

You will collaborate closely with business stakeholders, SAP functional consultants, enterprise architects, and data engineering teams to translate business requirements into high-quality, scalable technical solutions. As a trusted technical advisor and client-facing SME, you will contribute to solution design, code quality standards, and the continuous evolution of our SAP data engineering practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, develop, and maintain SAP BW/4HANA and BW-on-HANA data models, including Advanced DSOs, InfoCubes, CompositeProviders, Hybrid Providers, Open ODS Views, and DataStore Objects.

Develop and optimize ABAP programs, function modules, BAdIs, user exits, and ABAP OO-based solutions to support complex business requirements across SAP ECC and S/4HANA landscapes.

Build and maintain CDS (Core Data Services) Views - including analytical, basic, composite, and consumption views - aligned with the SAP clean core and side-by-side extensibility model.

Design and implement SAP BW extraction frameworks, including custom extractors, ODP (Operational Data Provisioning) sources, BAPIs, RFC function modules, LIS/LO cockpit extractors, and generic delta extractors.

Develop ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDPs) and SQLScript-based calculations to leverage SAP HANA's in-memory processing capabilities for high-performance analytics.

Create and maintain BEx Queries, query elements (restricted/calculated key figures, structures), and variables to support business reporting via SAP BW and SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).

Perform SAP BW/4HANA migration activities: convert legacy BW objects (InfoCubes, DSOs, MultiProviders) to BW/4HANA-compatible models, addressing compatibility and deprecation requirements.

Integrate SAP BW and ABAP-based solutions with SAP DataSphere, SAP BTP, and cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) via ODP, SLT, CDS Views, and REST/SOAP API-based interfaces.

Conduct comprehensive ABAP performance tuning: SQL trace analysis, runtime analysis, HANA execution plan reviews, and optimization of memory consumption for large-volume data loads and transformations.

Collaborate with SAP functional consultants and business analysts to gather requirements, produce technical design specifications, conduct peer code reviews, and ensure alignment with SAP best practices and clean core principles.

Lead and participate in solution design sessions, technical workshops, and architecture reviews; produce architecture decision records (ADRs), technical specifications, and reusable design patterns.

Establish and enforce ABAP coding standards, naming conventions, transport management disciplines, and documentation practices across project teams.

Support pre-sales activities, including solution scoping, effort estimation, RFP/RFI responses, proof-of-concept delivery, and client-facing technical presentations.

Mentor and guide junior ABAP and BW developers, sharing expertise in SAP development best practices, performance optimization, and modern CDS-first development approaches.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications:

SAP BW & Data Modeling :

7–10 years of hands-on SAP BW/4HANA or BW-on-HANA experience across full project lifecycles - from requirements gathering through design, build, test, and go-live.

Deep expertise in SAP BW/4HANA data modeling: Advanced DSOs (Standard, Write-Optimized, Direct Update), CompositeProviders, Open ODS Views, Hybrid Providers, and the Layered Scalable Architecture (LSA++) design pattern.

Strong knowledge of BW process chains, data transfer processes (DTPs), transformations, and delta load management for high-volume, production-grade data warehousing.

Hands-on experience building and maintaining BEx Queries, including restricted/calculated key figures, structures, exceptions, conditions, and variables for enterprise reporting.

Solid understanding of SAP HANA native modelling concepts: Calculation Views, SQL procedures, and in-memory data processing relevant to BW-on-HANA and BW/4HANA environments.

Experience in SAP BW/4HANA migration and landscape transformation - converting legacy BW objects, managing deprecation of InfoCubes/MultiProviders, and aligning to LSA++ architecture.

ABAP Development :

Expert-level ABAP programming skills: ABAP Objects (OO), ALV reports, classical/interactive reports, module pool, SmartForms/Adobe Forms, BAdIs, user exits, enhancements, and ABAP Unit testing.

Proficiency in ABAP on HANA: ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDPs), SQLScript, Code Push-Down techniques, and HANA-specific SQL optimizations.

Strong, demonstrable experience developing Core Data Services (CDS) Views across all layers - basic, composite, consumption, and analytical - including associations, annotations, parameters, and access control (DCL).

Extensive experience with SAP BW extraction development: custom extractors, ODP framework (full/delta), generic delta using change pointers or time stamps, BAPI/RFC extraction, and LIS/LO Cockpit configuration.

Experience with ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP) for building OData-based services and clean core-compliant extensions on S/4HANA Cloud and on-premise.

Proficiency in SAP transport management, ChaRM, debugging and runtime analysis tools (ST05, ST12, SM50/SM66, SAT), and code quality tooling (ATC, Code Inspector).

SAP S/4HANA & Ecosystem Knowledge :

Strong understanding of SAP S/4HANA architecture, data structures, and key business domains: Finance (FI/CO), Logistics (MM/SD/PP), and their impact on BW extraction and data modeling.

Familiarity with SAP S/4HANA embedded analytics and its interaction with BW: Virtual InfoProviders, ODP extraction from S/4HANA, and CDS-based reporting.

Working knowledge of SAP DataSphere, SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), and SAP BTP integration patterns as adjacent platforms to BW/4HANA and S/4HANA landscapes.

Experience with SAP Landscape Transformation (SLT) and other real-time replication tools for data movement between SAP systems and target analytics platforms.

Integration & Cloud Awareness :

Understanding of cloud-native data integration patterns: REST APIs, OData services, and middleware tools (Azure Data Factory, SAP Integration Suite) for connecting SAP with cloud platforms.

Familiarity with at least one major cloud platform - Azure, AWS, or GCP - particularly in the context of SAP-to-cloud data integration and extraction.

Knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD practices for ABAP development: gCTS (Git-based Change and Transport System), ABAP Test Cockpit (ATC), and pipeline-based quality gates.

Preferred Qualifications :

SAP Certified Application Associate - SAP BW/4HANA (current certification strongly preferred).

SAP Certified Development Associate - ABAP with SAP NetWeaver or SAP S/4HANA.

Experience with SAP HANA native development: Calculation Views, Analytic Privileges, and Smart Data Access (SDA) for federated data access.

Hands-on experience with SAP DataSphere data builders, data flows, and entity-relationship modelling as a next-generation complement to BW/4HANA.

Familiarity with Python or SQL scripting for data transformation tasks in hybrid SAP/cloud data pipelines.

Prior experience in a Big 4 consulting, global system integrator (GSI), or technology advisory environment with client-facing SAP delivery responsibilities.

Exposure to SAP S/4HANA Cloud implementations and the clean core extensibility model (side-by-side, in-app), including the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP).

Experience with real-time data replication strategies using SAP SLT, ODP streaming, or Kafka-based connectors for near-real-time data warehouse refresh scenarios.

Education :

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field.

Equivalent combination of professional experience, SAP certifications, and demonstrated technical achievement will be considered in lieu of a formal degree.
