THIS POSITION REQUIRES FULL-TIME, ON-SITE PRESENCE IN SANTA FE.

The New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) serves as the State's central financial management agency, providing fiscal oversight, budgetary control, accounting guidance, and statewide financial reporting to ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance with state and federal law. DFA supports executive leadership, the Legislature, state agencies, and the public by promoting sound fiscal stewardship and consistent financial practices across New Mexico government.

The Financial Control Division (FCD) is responsible for statewide accounting policy, financial reporting, and oversight of the State's financial systems, including SHARE.

The Federal Reporting and Compliance Bureau offers state agencies training, tools, data analysis, and hands-on technical assistance. Our goal is to help state agencies improve financial accuracy, strengthen compliance with federal regulations, reduce audit findings, and strengthening internal controls statewide.

The Federal Reporting and Compliance Accountant position exists to ensure the State of New Mexico properly manages, reports, and safeguards federal funds. Strong accounting is the foundation of Federal grant management, as it is the core operational function behind reporting, compliance, internal controls, and audit readiness.

This position is responsible for reconciling financial data to the general ledger, evaluating financial and audit documentation, interpreting reporting and compliance requirements, and monitoring corrective actions in relation to Single Audits.

How does it get done?

Reporting Responsibilities

Analyze financial data to identify anomalies and recommend corrections.

Assist agencies with SHARE setup, chartfields, budgeting, project costing, and financial adjustments.

Support SEFA preparation, audit reconciliations, and accurate federal financial reporting.

Assist with FFRs, drawdowns, cash management compliance, and documentation reviews.

Help develop dashboards, checklists, and statewide financial reporting tools.

Develop and deliver training, templates, and technical assistance for agency reporting staff.

Compliance Responsibilities

Strengthen subrecipient risk assessments, monitoring tools, and corrective action processes.

Provide guidance on federal allowability, cost principles, and internal controls under Uniform Guidance.

Review documentation to ensure compliance with federal regulations and agency policies.

Support agencies in implementing and documenting corrective actions related to audit findings.

Enhance statewide oversight by improving internal controls and ensuring consistent compliance practices.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Business Administration and three (3) years of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, budgeting, public accounting, and conducting financial audits to include a minimum of two (2) years preparing Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports or equivalent experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Working Conditions

Working conditions include, but not limited to: Work is performed in an office setting. Frequent late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required related to end-of-year financial reporting cycles. Travel may be required. Incumbent will frequently work under time constraints and is expected to maintain the highest level of professional conduct, ethics and confidentiality. Exposure to VDT's, CRT's or UV rays.
