Why joining our Maritime Finance Team

SMBC Group is a global leader in transportation finance, including in the maritime sector.

The maritime finance team in Paris is made up of around sixteen employees and covers the EMEA and Americas regions. As coverage bankers, we manage relationships with large shipping companies, and finance for them different types of strategic maritime assets such as LNG carriers, container ships, tankers, cruise ships or car carriers, through a variety of financing structures. The latter include, amongst others, green loans, sustainability-linked loans, limited recourse facilities and Japanese operating leases.

SMBC Group is committed to addressing climate change and supports customers on this path. SMBC Group was one of the first Asian financial institutions to join the Poseidon Principles, an initiative for climate alignment measure and disclosure in shipping finance.

Role Summary

The Maritime Finance team is looking for a new intern to join the team for a 6-month period starting in January 2027.

As an intern in the Maritime Finance team, you will take part of:

KYC (« Know Your Customer ») annual review for existing clients and new clients (collect documents from clients, coordination with internal KYC teams, system input)

Financial covenants monitoring and verification for existing transactions

Monitoring of financial statements receipt for existing clients

Financials analysis of corporate clients

Update of internal key operational reporting

Shipping market update

Formatting of powerpoint presentations

Profile

Gap year (“année de césure”) or end-of-studies student.

Strong motivation to work in an international and multicultural environment.

Strong team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills: regular interaction with teams in London

Skills valued

Fluent in English and French (written and spoken)

Ability to take initiative and work with autonomy

Good knowledge of financial analysis

Proficiency in MS Office tools (Excel, PPT, Word)

Analytical skills

Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Curious and self-motivated

Team oriented

Strong communication skills

Ability to interact with other teams and colleagues

Interest in project and asset financing, as well as in the Maritime sector.
