What are we looking for?

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join a very special team within Octopus Energy.

This isn’t a traditional dev role. You’ll join an agile, cross-functional team focused on building high-impact MVPs that make life easier for both our internal teams and our customers. Your mission? To identify real business needs, propose practical tech solutions, and bring them to life at speed.

The Octopus Energy Engineering team is responsible for the sites, services, and tariffs used by millions of customers worldwide. From building cutting-edge time-of-use tariffs to gamifying user experiences, we tackle a wide variety of exciting challenges to push the energy revolution forward.

Our teams are multi-disciplined and collaborate internationally, meaning you'll have the support and resources to collaborate with top-tier talent and deliver high-impact global solutions.

️ As a Backend Engineer in this team, you will:

Collaborate internationally: Work closely with Octopus Energy ES and various global teams to develop and integrate new features for our website and mobile app.

Own key product modules: Contribute directly to the private area, bill management, saving sessions, customer onboarding optimization, and marketing dashboards.

Drive fast-paced impact: Deliver code that directly impacts customers. Our priorities adapt to real-world needs, meaning the pace is fast and the feedback cycle is satisfyingly quick.

\uD83C\uDFAF What you’ll need to thrive

Fluent spoken English is absolutely essential \uD83C\uDDEC\uD83C\uDDE7. The team is international, so English will be the language you use on a daily basis.

On the technical side, you should have:

Strong professional experience building backend applications with Python.

Solid experience with Django (or equivalent robust web frameworks).

Deep understanding of Domain Modelling and software architecture.

Strong expertise designing and integrating GraphQL & REST APIs.

Proven experience writing robust, fault-tolerant, and scalable software.

Experience with Celery and asynchronous task processing.

Solid handling of relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead complex issues from concept to production.

\uD83E\uDDF2 Nice to have:

Experience with cloud platforms and infrastructure (AWS, Terraform, Packer, or Consul).

Familiarity or exposure to frontend technologies such as React and Next.js.

Familiarity with logging and metric aggregation platforms (DataDog).
