Construction Project Manager, Instrumentation & Controls

What to Expect

The Controls Construction Manager will work on the Tesla Infrastructure Construction team in collaboration with Project Managers to build facility control systems infrastructure for factory process and utility systems that support manufacturing tools and data centers. The candidate will learn, apply, and contribute to the further development of Tesla’s innovative controls program for expedited construction schedules. The Controls Construction Manager will also learn to value engineers and keep construction costs low and manage schedules as new designs are rolled out for implementation. What You'll Do

Manage instrumentation and controls (I&C) construction scopes from start to finish. Proficiency in reading P&IDs, controls drawings, cable and conduit schedules, wiring diagrams, installation details and technical specifications is key

Ensure proper installation of field instruments, control valves, devices, controls panels including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), life safety instruments and panels, VFDs, instrumentation, and automation equipment per Tesla design drawings and control schedule

Develop analysis tools to track performance of contractors and/or installed process systems

Interface with the Tesla engineering team to develop alternative designs to overcome field install and commissioning issues. This includes submitting engineering "request for information (RFI)", performing field walks, redlining drawings, design exploration meetings to resolve issues promptly

Work with engineering, construction and supply chain teams to specify/purchase/track field instruments, sensors, variable frequency drives, PLC panels and components, and automated control valves for installation. Through knowledge of all instrumentation and controls devices, PLCs and control valves are essential

Develop construction estimates, with necessary justifications and submit for approval. Track productivity and cost of installations against approved budget and highlight weekly burn rates for field installation crews

Liaise with facilities operations and manufacturing teams to turnover completed and functional utility process systems. And ensure that no outstanding design or implementation punch list items remain

What You'll Bring

5+ years of prior work experience managing I&C construction or commissioning projects

Proficiency in PLC & RIO system architecture, programming logic concepts, VFDs, life safety systems, HMI graphics, and PID control. Siemens PLC knowledge desired

Proficient in selecting appropriate field instrumentation, sensors, devices, and transmitters that are compatible with the process conditions

Familiarity with valve actuators (pneumatic and electric) and pressure regulators. Understanding of control valve installation and tubing requirements

Working knowledge to navigate 3D models, control / electrical / process design, instrument calibration and testing

Strong willingness to collaborate cross-functionally, work hands-on, and dive into open-ended projects in a fast-paced evolving environment

Willingness to work in field conditions that may require the candidate to operate lifts and use of common power and hand tools
