About the role

What to Expect

Tesla Energy is deploying the world’s largest fleet of battery energy storage systems (BESS) from residential Powerwall to grid-scale Megapack, across dozens of markets worldwide. Regulatory safety certification is the gate between engineering and the market.

As a Regulatory Safety Engineer you will be the in-house expert on product safety standards and market-entry regulations for BESS and supporting power electronics. You will translate complex normative requirements such as IEC, UL, CSA, EN, and beyond into engineering design specifications, then drive products through certification from first design review to certificate issue. You will work alongside hardware, power electronics, firmware, and systems engineers, making compliance a design and integral part of the process.

What You'll Do

Research and maintain a living map of market-entry requirements for BESS and ancillary equipment across North America, Europe, Australia, and emerging markets; interpret and apply applicable codes, regulations, and directives.

Horizon-scan for new and evolving standards affecting BESS products and communicate regulatory risk to engineering and programme leadership.

Develop Compliance Product Design Requirements (CPDRs) translating normative requirements into unambiguous engineering specifications, covering product-specific standards (IEC 62619, IEC 62933 series, IEC 62109/62477 series, UL 9540/9540A, UL 1741, UL 1973), and fundamental safety principles such as IEC 60664 series insulation coordination, IEC 60990 touch current, and IEC 60529 IP ratings.

Lead design reviews to identify compliance gaps and safety risks early; propose and track engineering solutions to closure.

Own CE marking end-to-end: conformity assessment route selection, technical file compilation, Declaration of Conformity (DoC) drafting, and Notified Body or competent authority liaison.

Define and manage certification strategies across global schemes such as UL/cUL (NRTL), CB Scheme (IECEE), CE marking, AS/NZS, and others as markets are entered, and author test plans and lead testing in-house and at accredited third-party laboratories.

Debug certification failures, root-cause anomalies, and propose design and/or test-method solutions; review test reports and manage certificate lifecycles, surveillance audits, and re-certification triggered by engineering changes.

Act as the regulatory safety SME for cross-functional engineering teams; support field compliance escalations and post-market surveillance; build internal knowledge bases and mentor junior engineers on regulatory processes and certification strategy.

What You'll Bring

Degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or equivalent; 5+ years in product safety certification for power electronics or energy storage products.

Proven CE marking expertise: technical file construction, DoC preparation, and Notified Body liaison; hands-on BESS and power electronics certification experience across IEC and UL standards (IEC 62619, 62933, 62109/62477, UL 9540, UL 1741, UL 1973).

Strong ability to interpret complex normative text, resolve ambiguities with laboratories and regulators, and translate requirements into testable engineering specifications.

Practical lab experience with power analysers, oscilloscopes, insulation testers, and environmental test chambers; clear written and verbal communication in English.

Tesla is also committed to working with and providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities. Please let your recruiter know if you need an accommodation at any point during the interview process.
