About the role

Under general supervision, provides technical and clinical support for the Livestock Herd Health and Reproduction Service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The position supports herd health and reproductive management programs through coordination of clinical operations, maintenance of medical and reproductive records, implementation of established protocols, and technical assistance with specialized reproductive services. This role contributes to high-quality patient care, client service, teaching, and research while promoting animal welfare, biosecurity, and operational efficiency in both hospital and field settings.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.

Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program

No minimum education required.

Experience with livestock anatomy, behavior and basic physiology, husbandry, handling, moving, restraining livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs or goats) including fractious and aggressive livestock. Must be able to identify and describe abnormal physical signs and appearances.

Experience administering vaccines , medication PO,IV,SQ & IM.

Experience using computer programs including; Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Experience working with populations/herds of animals and have basic understanding herd health concepts.

Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with the skills to effectively communicate with a diverse group of clients, faculty, residents and students, verbally and in writing with excellent penmanship and the skills to transcribe numbers without confusion.

Good organizational skills to prioritize daily/weekly workload with skills to recognize and handle difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with assisted reproductive technology of livestock, field medicine and triage, including but not limited to anesthesia, castration, IV fluid administration, venipuncture.

Experience with euthanasia of livestock including utilization of a captive bolt.

Knowledge of medications commonly used in livestock.

Knowledge of infection control programs, dairy records systems, livestock reproduction programs and basis preventive medicine herd health programs.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
