About the role

At American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues. From delivering differentiated products to providing world-class customer service, we operate with a strong risk mindset, ensuring we continue to uphold our brand promise of trust, security, and service.

As part of Team Amex, you'll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career. Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.

The Team:

The Enterprise AI Transformation Office sits at the center of one of the company’s most important strategic priorities: harnessing AI and automation to fundamentally transform how we operate, serve customers, and create long-term enterprise value.

This program is designed to deliver outsized impact across three critical audiences:

Customers: Elevate experiences to be more personalized, seamless, and differentiated - delivered consistently and at scale.

Colleagues: Simplify and automate internal processes so teams can focus on driving the most important business outcomes.

Shareholders: Reimagine how we work and what we deliver - leveraging AI and automation to improve performance, increase efficiency, and drive sustainable enterprise value.

The Enterprise AI Transformation Office will lead and support enterprise-wide initiatives, measurement and governance, cultivate a future pipeline of transformation opportunities, and modernize core business enablement processes (e.g., TLM, New Product Development, Model Governance). We will redesign these processes to eliminate friction and automate where possible - without compromising strong risk management and governance - enabling the enterprise to move with speed and confidence.

The team will also work closely with partners across Technology, Product, Risk, Talent, and Business Units to ensure GenAI and Agentic AI initiatives already underway continue to scale and accelerate.

The Role:

The Director, Enterprise AI Transformation Office will help shape, prioritize, and drive the execution of the enterprise AI transformation agenda, ensuring the highest-impact initiatives deliver measurable business outcomes at scale.

This leader will partner directly with teams across the enterprise to strengthen execution of critical AI initiatives, ensure initiatives deliver at scale, and drive sustainable value. The role will also help define and build the foundation for future AI efforts by creating pipelines for new initiatives, developing tracking and insights, and championing the sharing and adoption of AI best practices across the enterprise.

This role will step into complex, in-flight programs to provide structure, remove barriers, and enhance cross-functional coordination. The leader will bring enterprise perspective, disciplined execution oversight, and connectivity across teams to amplify outcomes and unlock momentum. This is a highly collaborative leadership role requiring influence without direct authority and the ability to drive measurable progress in dynamic, fast-moving environments.

This is a highly visible role requiring strong executive communication and presentation skills, structured thinking, and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguity. The ideal candidate can bring clarity to white space, adapt quickly as priorities evolve, and drive coordinated execution across a complex, matrixed environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Define and evolve the enterprise AI transformation operating model, including governance, intake, and key processes

Set success metrics and develop tracking to ensure accountability for business outcomes across initiatives

Partner with business leaders to fast-track strategic initiatives critical to enterprise growth and transformation

Introduce structured program management, milestone tracking, and performance visibility to improve speed, focus, and outcomes

Connect related initiatives, capabilities, and leadership efforts to avoid duplication, increase leverage, and amplify impact

Identify execution bottlenecks, decision delays, resource constraints, and cross-functional friction; drive rapid resolution

Facilitate alignment across Technology, Product, Risk, Operations, Finance, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery

Own accountability for ensuring enterprise AI initiatives deliver measurable business outcomes and sustained value

Deliver clear, structured updates and data-driven insights to senior leadership to inform strategic decisions

Foster cultural and behavioral change required to embed AI into day-to-day decision-making and business processes

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Proven track record of leading large-scale, cross-functional enterprise initiatives and/or product-driven efforts with measurable business impact

Strong understanding of AI, data, and digital capabilities, with experience translating strategy into executable programs that drive growth and efficiency

Strong ability to diagnose execution challenges and rapidly implement pragmatic solutions

High adaptability and learning agility; ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, evolving environments and adjust priorities as strategic needs shift

Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in ambiguity and white space - shaping structure where none exists and evolving the model as the work progresses

Strong program management discipline with the ability to instill structure while maintaining speed and flexibility

Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and align stakeholders across diverse functions

Strong executive communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive alignment across diverse teams
