At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential.

With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

Come and be a part of this success.

About the Role

Reporting to the Superintendent Rail Renewals Execution, this role is responsible for enhancing the reliability, availability and performance of signalling assets across the WAIO rail network. Working closely with Maintenance, Engineering and Projects teams, you will provide technical expertise in asset management, defect elimination, maintenance optimisation and lifecycle planning to support safe, reliable and sustainable rail operations.

Rail has a financial year with set outages where sections of the rail network are shut down for maintenance activities. These are approximately 15 per year and each one is allocated to an outage coordinator. The coordinate is required to plan the scope of the outage, determine the scope of works to be executed and coordinate between the different work groups to complete the outage safely. This includes developing the overall outage schedule, the rail network possession limits and manage the allocated Protection Officers to establish the safe working system.

Improve the reliability, availability and performance of signalling assets across the WAIO rail network.

Lead defect elimination initiatives by analysing asset performance data and implementing solutions to reduce recurring failures and operational risk.

Conduct and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for signalling failures and major operational events.

Monitor signalling asset health, reliability trends and emerging risks, using data to drive improvement opportunities.

Govern condition monitoring programs and asset health assessments.

Develop, review and optimise maintenance strategies, including maintenance task reviews and interval optimisation.

Create asset management and lifecycle plans to support capital forecasting, asset renewal and long-term sustainability.

Develop business cases, scopes and technical recommendations for reliability improvement and capital replacement projects.

Provide technical engineering support to Operations and Maintenance teams.

Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Projects and OEMs/vendors to improve signalling asset performance.

Champion safety, risk management and environmental responsibility.

About you

Degree qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Systems Engineering or a related discipline, or a Trade Qualification with significant railway signalling experience.

Demonstrated experience within rail signalling operations, maintenance, reliability, engineering or asset management environments, with responsibility for asset performance and reliability improvement.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and fault investigation skills, with the ability to use asset performance data to identify risks, opportunities and improvement initiatives.

Experience applying reliability methodologies such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and defect elimination practices.

Sound knowledge of railway signalling systems, including interlockings, train detection systems, points and turnouts, signalling power systems and train control systems.

Experience with SAP or similar maintenance management systems and an understanding of maintenance strategy development and optimisation.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and Project teams and influence technical outcomes.

Experience with heavy haul rail operations, advanced signalling technologies (CBTC, ETCS), condition monitoring and asset health systems will be highly regarded.

Exposure to Power BI, Python or similar analytical and visualisation tools is advantageous.

Knowledge of rail safety standards, signalling principles and regulatory requirements, with a strong commitment to safety and risk management.

Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes in a dynamic operational environment.

Valid C/CA Class Driver's Licence.
