Operations Systems Development Manager – National Depot Network
James Latham is one of the UK’s leading distributors of timber and timber panel products. As part of our continued investment in operational systems, depot capability and national process improvement, we are seeking an experienced Operations Systems Development Manager to support our depot network and National Distribution Centre.
The Opportunity
This is a national, field-based role focused on helping our depot teams get the maximum value from core operational systems including WMS, TMS, Geotab Telematics, Digital EHS systems and other depot-facing tools. Working closely with depot managers, the NDC, IT, Health & Safety and central operations, you will build capability, embed best practice, standardise processes and support measurable operational improvement across the business.
Key Responsibilities
System adoption: Partner with depot teams to maximise the value and consistent use of WMS, TMS, Geotab Telematics, Digital EHS systems and other operational systems.
Operational improvement: Identify underused system functionality and develop practical plans to improve productivity, utilisation, accuracy, planning discipline and service performance.
Process standardisation: Support the introduction of consistent ways of working across the depot network, reducing variation and embedding best practice.
Capability building: Coach depot managers, supervisors and key users to improve confidence, system knowledge and day-to-day operational control.
Super-user development: Build a network of local super-users who can sustain improvements and support effective system use within each location.
Compliance and safety: Promote effective use of Digital EHS systems and other systems to strengthen safety management, training compliance and operational visibility.
Data-led improvement: Use system data, KPIs and reporting to identify gaps, track progress and highlight opportunities for continuous improvement.
Cross-functional working: Act as a link between depots, central operations, IT, Health & Safety and the NDC to ensure systems support practical operational needs.
Required Experience & Skills
Strong operational experience within warehousing, distribution, transport, logistics or multi-site depot operations.
Experience supporting or leading the implementation, improvement or optimisation of operational systems such as WMS, TMS, telematics or EHS platforms.
Practical understanding of depot operations, system adoption, process compliance and performance improvement.
Ability to coach, influence and support operational managers and local teams through change.
Confident using operational data, KPIs and reports to identify issues, monitor performance and support decision-making.
Clear communicator with the ability to simplify systems, processes and expectations for operational teams.
Self-motivated, organised and comfortable managing priorities across multiple locations.
IOSH Managing Safely, Lean / continuous improvement or relevant logistics, warehousing, transport or systems qualification would be advantageous.
