About the role

Work Location: 100% Fully Remote

Work Hours: Mon-Fri Daylight: 8am-5pm

PURPOSE: The primary role of the IT Data Engineer Expert position is to collaborate with the IT management team, the IT Enterprise Architecture team, all facets of UPMCs technical and data teams, and third-party partners to design and implement elegant, performant, secure and highly available data solutions for the organization. Additionally, this position will be held accountable for the typical activities involved with development or engineering work, including but not limited to refining requirements, architecting production stable solutions, and creating relevant documentation, while adhering to data engineering best practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrate a clear and compelling expertise in a technical area integral to Healthcare IT.

A Data Engineer holding this Job Grade will be expected to participate in and provide expert advice and planning.

Specifically Lead engineering Project development efforts, maintaining a timeline for milestones and deliverables for the entire team associated with the project.

Effectively communicate resource needs and allocation for the project to the department leadership.

Provide technology and operational support to the department Management team.

Partner with all IT members in project planning and resource allocation.

Working with IT Architects and management, identify, develop, and manage a strategic engineering plan for the candidate's respective project(s) within the department.

Candidate will be expected to participate in project proposal process and roadmap process.

Work with department leadership providing status updates, recommendations for improvements, and other inputs to provide a world class engineering development organization.

Interface with peers throughout UPMC to develop a strong working relationship between all groups within UPMC.

Seek opportunities to reduce costs through elimination of duplicate/redundant efforts.

Evaluate new hardware and software products and technologies and participate in project assessments, as necessary.

Takes ownership and delivery responsibility for special projects or initiatives.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Science, or a healthcare related field, or has acquired core software development skills and knowledge via practical experience.

Prefer 10+ years of relevant experience in complex development environments.

Demonstrates the ability to conceptualize, anticipate and solve complex technical problems with sustainable and reliable solutions.

The ability to develop significant software projects must be demonstrated.

Successful candidates must be able work independently as well as in small groups and to approach problems creatively.

Candidates should be self-motivated and possess a strong desire to exceed expectations.

Working knowledge and understanding of common healthcare messaging standards (HL7v2, HL7v3, CCDA, CDA, FHIR, etc.)

Deep knowledge of implementing ETL or ELT processes leveraging Cloud technologies (Azure, Snowflake, GCP, etc.)

Experience with existing HL7 integration utilities (IBM, Rhapsody, Kafka, Apache, etc.)

Holds deep knowledge and high proficiency of Computer Science Principles (Complexity Analysis, Data Structures, Patterns) and at least one programming language (such as C, C++, C#, Java, or Python)

Possess a complete set of programming/debugging skills.

Intellectual flexibility, self-motivated and possess a strong desire to exceed expectations.

Excellent organizational and analytical abilities.

Critical strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills are highly desired.

Excellent communication skills - verbal, written and visual.
