Director of Business Development

National Grid Ventures is at the forefront of shaping Europe’s future energy system, with interconnectors playing a critical role in enabling security of supply, affordability, and decarbonisation across the North Sea and beyond.

We are looking for a Business Development Director to join the Interconnectors Executive team, reporting directly to the Managing Director. You will become part of a high-calibre, curious, motivated, inclusive leadership team, in a role that has significant strategic and commercial leadership responsibilities.

Job purpose

The Business Development Director will lead the origination and structuring of a multi-billion pound European growth pipeline, spanning first-of-a-kind offshore hybrid assets, cross-border interconnectors, and emerging competitive transmission opportunities. Leading a direct team of around six people, with a wider team of 25, this role directly supports National Grid’s growth ambition, agreed by the Board, to the competitive HVDC business across the UK and Europe.

The role operates at the centre of European market and system development, building and leading senior partnerships with governments, TSOs, and industry leaders to unlock opportunities in complex, policy-driven environments. The role will play a critical part in shaping market design, regulatory frameworks, and cross-border system architecture, positioning NGV as the partner of choice in the development of Europe’s future energy network.

The role will have responsibility for the commercial development of a portfolio of flagship projects, alongside ownership of the wider origination pipeline and inorganic growth opportunities.

This is a high-impact, externally-facing leadership role, responsible for translating market opportunity into investable propositions - shaping not just individual projects, but the partnerships, frameworks, and cross-border system integration that will define the next generation of Europe’s energy infrastructure.

Key accountabilities

Origination & Growth Pipeline Leadership

Implement NGV Growth Strategy, linking with Group Strategy, Finance, Policy & Regulation, and Market Analytics

Own the end-to-end development of a high-quality European growth pipeline, aligned to NGV strategy

Identify and prioritise opportunities across GB-linked ICs, EU expansion, and adjacent markets

Drive pace, focus, and value discipline across early-stage opportunities

Commercial Structuring & Deal Leadership

Lead structuring of complex, multi-billion-pound infrastructure opportunities

Define commercial models, risk allocation, and investment approaches

Shape commercial frameworks for first-of-a-kind and cross-border infrastructure models

Mature projects through early-stage development to pre-FEED / FEED definition and investable business case

Strategic Partnering & Market Access

Build and lead senior strategic relationships with TSOs, governments, advisors, developers, and investors across Europe

Establish NGV as a trusted and preferred partner in key markets and corridors

Lead early-stage partnership formation and joint venture structuring

Market Shaping & Regulatory Positioning

Shape and influence regulatory and commercial frameworks required to unlock investable opportunities

Work closely with policy teams to ensure alignment with evolving market design

Represent NGV in senior external forums and engagement with policymakers and regulators

External Representation & Thought Leadership

Represent National Grid at major European conferences, government summits, and international industry forums

Serve as a recognised spokesperson, panellist, and thought leader on offshore coordination, hybrid grids, energy market design, and cross‑border system integration

Build National Grid’s profile as a central actor in shaping the future of Europe’s offshore energy system

BD Function Leadership & Executive Contribution

Build and lead a high-performing, internationally focussed BD team

Define pipeline governance, prioritisation, and investment decision points

Ensure clear ownership, accountability, and performance across all opportunities

Act as a core member of the Interconnectors Executive Team, contributing to strategic direction, prioritisation, capital allocation, and overall performance

Candidate profile

Extensive experience in energy, infrastructure, or comparable sectors

Proven track record in origination, deal structuring, project development, and/or strategic partnerships

Strong understanding of European and UK energy markets, regulation, and commercial models

Experience engaging senior external stakeholders (government, regulators, partners)

Highly commercial, opportunity-led mindset

Location: London/Warwick/hybrid.

Salary: competitive base salary plus commensurate benefits.
