Position: Millwork Engineer / Furniture Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer -Architecture
Experience: 5-8 years

Duration: 12- 18 months Contract / Direct Hire
Summary/Objective:
The focus of the Senior Mechanical Engineer – Furniture / Millwork is to provide engineering design of furniture products focused in the educational space. Performs CAD designs, FEA Analysis, drives prototyping, and works within a cross functional team with partners and manufacturers locally and in Asia to drive new product development.
Essential Functions
Lead new product development projects supporting engineering design from concept to production, working within a cross functional team (Product Development, Quality, Industrial Design, Asia Engineering and Sourcing), under a phase gate new product development process.
Engineer complex furniture designs focused on function, safety, durability, aesthetics, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
Utilize Solidworks CAD for engineering designs, generating 3D models, as well as manufacturing 2D drawings of parts and assemblies, including Bills of Materials (BOMs). Ensure 2D manufacturing drawings include sufficient detail including material specs, finishes, critical dimensions, note call outs and tolerances.
Ability to perform stress analysis utilizing Solidworks FEA.
Manage engineering prototype builds internally and with external resources.
Benchmark and deconstruct product samples and document information, including but not limited to construction methods, material identification, and dimensional measurements.
Perform various functions as applicable to the design, including material research and selection, hand calculations and tolerance stack-ups.
Lead and support engineering design reviews and cross functional product development meetings. Offer feedback, recommendations, and design options and convey pros and cons to achieve the optimal result.
Work proactively with Asia Engineer Team and manufacturers in China and Vietnam to optimize designs for manufacturability (DFM), cost and schedule. Attend Asia calls for assigned projects
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Proficient in SolidWorks CAD software with a demonstrated ability to create intricate 3D and 2D designs of parts and assemblies
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing standards and experience in Solidworks FEA simulation
Experienced in various technologies including but not limited to woods, laminates, plastics, metal, electronics, textiles, foams, and upholstery methods
Team player with strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional team environment
Familiar with offshore manufacturing, particularly in Asia
Knowledge of furniture product testing, such as BIFMA knowledge, is a plus
Knowledge of Design for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) is desirable
Communicates critical updates and escalates key challenges to leadership in a timely manner
Creative and detail-oriented, takes initiative and passionate about product designs that make a positive impact on children’s learning and development
Ability to work in a fast-paced organization, strong multi-tasker with the ability to effectively balance priorities
Works with a positive can-do attitude, highly accountable to self and others, drives closure of tasks and completes quality work on time
Education & Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
7+ years experience in engineering design of consumer goods
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in engineering design of furniture products
Education
Minimum Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other technical discipline
