About us

The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering departments in the UK. The Department is proud to host internationally-leading research groups covering a broad range of activities and spread over several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. Our focus is on excellent academic research in identifying new technologies and methods for diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and the development of implanted devices. We also offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

About the role

The main role of the post holder will be to provide technical support for all undergraduate lab activities that focus or required mechanical knowledge and skills and/or manufacturing. The post holder may be required to develop other skills (such as electronics). Specific training will be provided in such cases. The technician is also responsible for monitoring and maintaining a safe working environment within the teaching laboratories.

Support will also be provided for the department’s wider operations as required. This could involve work in other laboratories and teaching spaces, including large-scale projects that have specific deadlines. This may occasionally involve being flexible with working hours to achieve these deadlines during the term times.

This will be a busy role specially during term time, in a fast-paced environment, and the post holder will be expected to be adaptable, proactive and quickly assimilate information.

The post holder will be expected to engage in suitable training to increase their knowledge and skills, and in conjunction with this, they will have opportunities to develop their role within the department in accordance with their aptitude and abilities.

The post holder is expected to take a proactive approach to their work, making suggestions for improvements in working methods and implementing them under the guidance of their line manager, as well as to establish their own support networks across UCL.

About you

The successful applicant will possess a degree in Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, along with proven experience in mechanical testing of materials. They will demonstrate proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and exhibit a keen willingness to acquire proficiency in new equipment and technical software. Experience in programming and familiarity with tools such as Matlab, Arduino, Python, 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines will be highly advantageous.

Moreover, the successful candidate will exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team. They will possess strong written and oral communication abilities, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving. Impeccable organisational skills, coupled with an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of laboratory practice, will be essential attributes.
