Job Description

As an Experienced Geo / Field Technician, you’ll take the lead on delivering high-quality geotechnical outcomes across a wide range of projects - from residential slabs to complex commercial and modular builds. This is a hands-on, field-based role for someone who already knows their way around a nuclear density gauge and a drill rig, and is ready to take on greater technical ownership, mentor junior staff, and be the trusted point of contact on site.

You’ll work across diverse ground conditions throughout NSW, operating drill rigs and compaction equipment alongside heavy machinery, with 4WD site access to some of the state’s most varied and challenging terrain. You’ll also play a key role in maintaining the technical and quality standards that underpin IdealCorp’s NATA-accredited laboratory and reputation as a market leader.

This is the right move for an experienced technician who wants more autonomy, more responsibility, and a genuine pathway into supervisory or senior technical roles.

Key Responsibilities

Independently plan and conduct field compaction testing using a nuclear density gauge, with minimal supervision

Oversee and verify cut and fill works in accordance with AS 3798, signing off compliance where required

Operate drill rigs proficiently for geotechnical investigation work

Conduct DCP, moisture, and compaction testing, interpreting results to identify site risks or non-conformances

Collect and log soil samples, ensuring chain-of-custody and NATA-compliant documentation standards

Perform and review laboratory testing including moisture content, sieve analysis, and Proctor compaction (AS 1289 series)

Mentor and supervise junior field technicians, providing on-the-job training and quality checks

Liaise directly with site supervisors, engineers, and clients to resolve field issues in real time

Maintain accurate, audit-ready records and drive compliance with safety and quality systems

Identify and lead process improvements, contributing to IdealCorp’s continuous improvement culture

Support scheduling and resourcing decisions on multi-site days as required

Selection Criteria

3+ years’ experience in geotechnical field testing, soil/lot classification, or a related earthworks/construction QA role

Current NSW Radiation User Licence - a must, with demonstrated hands-on experience using nuclear density gauges

Proficient operating drill rigs for geotechnical investigation

Working knowledge of AS 3798 and AS 1289 testing methods

Current Manual Car Driver’s Licence (essential); 4WD experience highly regarded

Valid Australian White Card

Mechanically minded, with strong practical, hands-on ability

Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities, and make sound technical judgment calls on site

Experience mentoring, training, or informally supervising junior staff

Strong communication skills and high attention to detail, particularly in technical reporting

Sound WHS knowledge and a genuine safety-first mindset within the geotechnical field

Available to start soon and keen to step into an experienced, high-trust role within a growing team
