Provides expert database administration and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) support for enterprise database platforms. Responsible for ensuring the availability, performance, security, and reliability (24/7/365) of database environments across on‑premises and cloud (AWS RDS).
Contributes to the transformation of technology operations into an outcome-based, automation-first operating model, enabling:
Clear end-to-end accountability
Reduced manual effort through automation and self-healing capabilities
Measurable improvements in reliability, cost efficiency, and risk management
Shifts from activity-based metrics to outcome-based metrics (availability, resiliency, cost)
Uses automation as the primary execution engine (AIOps, self-healing)
Reduces operational demand through engineering and automation
Improves service reliability, cost-to-serve, and operational risk
Key Responsibilities
Support and maintain Oracle, MSSQL, and AWS RDS platforms, ensuring high availability and performance
Proactively monitor systems; troubleshoot incidents and perform root cause analysis (RCA)
Participate in on-call rotation and support major incident resolution
Execute database changes in alignment with BMO change management and risk frameworks
Apply SRE principles (SLI/SLO, reliability engineering) to improve system stability
Develop and maintain automation solutions (Python, Bash, Ansible, TypeScript) to reduce manual effort
Implement Configuration as Code (CaC) and automated provisioning/patching
Integrate Liquibase with CI/CD pipelines for controlled, auditable deployments
Enhance observability capabilities using tools such as OEM, CloudWatch, Dynatrace
Drive proactive monitoring, self-healing capabilities, and MTTR reduction
Administer:
Oracle and MSSQL (on-premises and cloud)
AWS RDS environments
Oracle GoldenGate replication
Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies
Perform patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management
Ensure security, access controls, and compliance standards
Conduct performance tuning and query optimization using tools such as:
AWR, OEM
SQL Profiler, Performance Monitor
Troubleshoot and resolve:
Database integrity issues
Blocking, deadlocks, and concurrency issues
Replication and high availability issues
Connectivity and resource contention (CPU, memory, I/O, storage)
Perform capacity planning and identify system constraints proactively
Optimize resource utilization and improve overall system efficiency
Identify and implement cloud cost optimization opportunities
Design and implement efficient methods to store, organize, and access data
Support data lifecycle management (create, update, archive, delete)
Build scalable, maintainable database solutions aligned with enterprise standards
Enable solutions requiring minimal operational overhead through automation
Support audit, compliance, and regulatory requirements
Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for database platforms
Provide input into strategic initiatives and operational improvements
Promote best practices, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning across teams
Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices
Qualifications & Experience
7+ years of enterprise database administration experience
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
Strong hands-on expertise with:
Oracle and MSSQL
AWS RDS
Oracle GoldenGate
Experience working in mission-critical, high-availability environments (24/7 support)
Core Skills
Automation & scripting: Ansible, TypeScript, Python, Bash
Database DevOps: Liquibase, CI/CD integration
Observability & monitoring: OEM, CloudWatch
Strong troubleshooting skills across:
Performance issues
Replication and HA setups
Availability and incident response
Understanding of SRE principles (SLI/SLO, reliability, resiliency)
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Nice to Have Knowledge
ServiceNow (SNOW)
Advanced experience with Dynatrace (DT)
Exposure to cloud-native / platform engineering models
Relevant certifications:
Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
AWS Certified Database – Specialty
Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator
Salary:
$75,900.00 - $141,900.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
