About the role

At the heart of global supply, Trafigura connects vital resources to power and build the world. Through our Oil & Petroleum Products, Gas and Power, Bulk and Metals and Minerals commercial divisions, we use infrastructure, logistics and financing to connect producers and consumers, using our deep understanding of the markets we serve to make supply more efficient, secure and sustainable.

We are committed to responsible business practices and believe that the supply of energy and raw materials is essential for growth, development and prosperity. We are accelerating our investments in renewable energy, including hydrogen, ammonia and other low-carbon energy technologies required for the transition to a low carbon future. And we work with our stakeholders to improve environmental and social standards, bringing greater trust and transparency to global supply chains.

A career at Trafigura offers a gateway to working on some of the most exciting challenges of a rapidly changing world – from helping to optimise supply chains to developing infrastructure and new markets. In a culture that is founded on openness and energy, our people work as part of a multinational, globally connected team and thrive in a fast-paced environment where they can nurture and commercialise bold ideas. Everyone has a voice and is empowered to collaborate across geographies and disciplines to help shape our business and the wider world. We know the importance and value of diversity in our business and we invest in attracting, developing and retaining talent from all backgrounds.

Founded in 1993, Trafigura is one of the largest independent employee-owned commodities groups in the world with over 13,000 people working in 48 countries.

We are looking for a Senior Python Engineer to join our Gas, Power & Renewables (GPR) Technology team. You will be a core member of a small, high-impact engineering group embedded within a broader team of quants, analysts, traders, and deal desk professionals.

Your primary focus will be building risk solutions for the Power and Gas trading desk on top of Beacon Platform. This is a 100% hands-on development role - you will own the full development lifecycle, from capturing requirements directly with traders and stakeholders through to delivering production-quality solutions.

This role will work directly with the trading desk. Candidates who have previously worked in a trading floor environment will be familiar with the pace and communication style, and will have a natural advantage.

What You Will Do

Design, build, and maintain risk and analytics solutions for the Power and Gas desk using Python on top of Beacon Platform

Integrate quantitative models developed by the quant team into Beacon and connect them to relevant market data sources

Work in a fast-paced trading environment where decisions are made quickly and feedback is direct

Engage directly with traders, quants, analysts, and the deals desk to gather requirements, understand business needs, and present technical solutions

Collaborate with other Beacon engineers within the team to ensure consistency, code quality, and shared best practices

Contribute to the ongoing evolution of the GPR technology stack

What We Are Looking For

Technical Skills

Strong Python development skills

2+ years of hands-on development experience on Beacon Platform, Quarts, or Athena; candidates with SecDB development experience will also be considered

Solid understanding of quantitative modelling concepts - you will not be building models yourself, but you will be integrating them and need to understand what they do

Experience with Apache Kafka is a plus

Domain Knowledge

Good knowledge of commodities markets, with a preference for US power and gas (both physical and paper)

Familiarity with instruments such as heat rate options, gas storage products, PPAs, and tolling agreements is highly desirable

Soft Skills

Confident and resilient under pressure - comfortable receiving direct, candid feedback and using it constructively

Comfortable engaging with non-technical stakeholders - traders, analysts, and deal desk - to translate business requirements into technical solutions

Able to present and explain technical approaches clearly to a mixed audience

Self-sufficient and delivery-focused; this is not a role with heavy management oversight

Key Relations and Reporting Structure

Reporting Line

Reports directly to the Global Head, Gas, Power & Renewables Technology
