Overview

The Embedded Firmware Lead is responsible for architecting, developing, and maintaining high‑quality embedded software for microcontroller‑based products. This role involves leading a team of firmware engineers, owning the firmware roadmap, collaborating with cross‑functional hardware and product teams, and ensuring robust, scalable, and production‑ready firmware delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

Lead the design, development, and optimization of embedded firmware for microcontrollers (8/16/32‑bit).

Define firmware architecture, coding standards, and review processes.

Guide the team on best practices for RTOS, drivers, HAL, bootloaders, and low-level firmware.

Firmware Development

Develop and debug embedded C/C++ code for real-time systems.

Implement communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, BLE, Wi-Fi, etc.).

Work closely with hardware engineers to interpret schematics, bring up new boards, and run diagnostics.

Integrate firmware with sensors, actuators, wireless modules, and custom hardware.

Project Ownership

Own the firmware development lifecycle: requirement gathering planning estimation execution validation release.

Maintain documentation: architecture diagrams, technical specs, API docs, and release notes.

Ensure adherence to safety, compliance, and quality standards (MISRA, ISO 26262, IEC 62304, etc. if applicable).

Team Collaboration

Mentor and upskill junior engineers.

Conduct code reviews and ensure high coding quality.

Collaborate with QA and testing teams to define test plans, unit tests, and automation strategies.

Performance & Optimization

Analyze performance issues and implement optimizations for memory, power consumption, and timing.

Evaluate new microcontrollers, toolchains, and development platforms.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related field.

7-12+ years of embedded firmware development experience, with at least 2-3 years in a lead role.

Strong expertise in C/C++ for embedded systems.

Hands-on experience with RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX, etc.).

Experience with MCU families like STM32, NXP, TI, Nordic, Microchip, ESP32, etc.

Strong debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD, etc.

Proven experience in driver development and integration with hardware.

Preferred / Good-to-Have

Experience with CI/CD for firmware (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI).

Exposure to wireless stacks (Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, LoRa, Thread, Zigbee).

Knowledge of secure boot, OTA updates, and firmware security.

Familiarity with Python for automation scripts.

Experience in Agile/Scrum environments.
