About the role:

The Analytics Engineer supports the delivery of public and government reporting by designing, developing and maintaining data pipelines and reporting datasets within the Analytics Services unit. Working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, the role delivers high-quality data solutions that underpin performance reporting and analytics, ensuring outputs meet statutory and public-facing requirements.

The role requires strong SQL capability, sound expertise in dimensional modelling, and experience developing analytical data products to support reporting and decision‑making. The Analytics Engineer will also demonstrate effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, contribute positively within a team environment, and manage their work to meet agreed priorities and timelines.

About you:

Can you demonstrate the following?

Works with complex concepts to develop data pipelines and reporting products aligned to business needs, applying sound theoretical and practical expertise in their design and delivery. Applies advanced theoretical knowledge in a specialised field to operational problem solving.

Prepares reports, briefs and correspondence on complex issues that impact at program or organisational level.

Contributes to or supports the development and implementation of operational communication and consultation strategies on specific projects.

Develops clear, structured briefs on complex issues, drawing on research and analysis to present evidence-based options that inform discussion and support decision-making.

Prepares project scopes and briefs consistent with business plan direction.

Qualifications / Specialist Expertise

A relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent extensive industry experience) is essential.

Demonstrates experience in designing, developing and supporting data warehousing, ETL processes, and analytical and reporting products using complex and disparate administrative data sources.

Sound understanding of data modelling concepts, with experience developing analytical data structures (e.g. dimensional models).

Experience in developing and maintaining data pipelines and reporting datasets.

Demonstrates strong SQL capability, with hands-on experience in Azure environments, including key services such as Azure SQL and Azure Data Factory.

Experience delivering analytics and data engineering solutions using Databricks.

Demonstrates experience in visualising and communicating complex data using business intelligence tools such as Power BI.

Experience working with Python and/or PySpark for data processing and analysis is desirable.

Understanding of the Victorian health system, including administrative health datasets and reporting environments, is desirable.

Familiarity with data governance frameworks and practices is desirable.
