Job description

As a web developer, you will be instrumental in developing high-impact digital products to inform critical decision making. You will own and shape these tools from inception to use by system leaders, exercising significant range in the techniques you choose to deploy.

You will work closely with colleagues in No10 and across government to deliver these solutions in line with best practice. Our customers include senior ministers, the Prime Minister and Civil Service leaders.

Main responsibilities:

You will be working closely with colleagues in 10DS to build and visualise compelling data-driven tools and user interfaces.

Create and maintain interactive dashboards and decision-making tools based on user needs, at pace to ensure impactful communication of data.

Work collaboratively with analysts to ensure complex analysis is presented clearly through data visualisation and to a high quality.

Engage with stakeholders to create an optimal data product that suits their UI/UX demands

Applying your knowledge of cutting-edge data front end visualisation techniques and sharing knowledge of approaches within 10DS and across government.

You will be able to competently demonstrate:

Essential Skills/Experience:

Experience of front-end development, with detailed knowledge of TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and a front-end framework (e.g., React, Vue.js, or Angular)

Experience of developing tools throughout the product lifecycle, from inception to scaling up. Understanding of software design principles, and best-practice version and quality control.

Experience of technologies used for web applications, e.g., HTTPS, JSON and CDNs, and of Unix-like operating systems, eg Linux and/or Mac OS.

Ability to deploy scalable products into production using best practice on code quality, reusability, unit testing (e.g. Jest), and integration testing (e.g., Pact)

Experience working with analytical data, building robust and accessible visualisations using modern web technologies (e.g., d3, Mantine, Recharts)

Highly developed communication and networking skills, an ability to build strong relationships and operate with senior stakeholders across government, and skills to translate complex information into meaningful, easily understood narratives.

The following are desirable (but proficiency can be developed in post):

Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure and deployment methodologies (e.g., Docker, Infrastructure as Code)

Experience developing AI integrations.

Experience working with platforms that serve high traffic or usage.

Confident programming ability including in building APIs (e.g., Python, or other relevant languages) and comfortable data wrangling structured and unstructured datasets (e.g., pandas, SQL).

Additional information:

Cabinet Office policy is that a minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace. For some roles, due to their nature and the business need, this may be up to 100%. Requirements to attend other locations for official business will also count towards this level of attendance.

Selection process

Candidates successful at sift will be invited to a technical assessment held virtually as part of stage 1 interviews. This will require access to your preferred analytical software - typically people use a programming language that is good for data analysis such as python or R. Further information about the exercise will be shared with shortlisted candidates.

Candidates successful at stage 1 assessment will be invited to Behaviour and Technical based interview.

We may also offer ‘near-miss’ opportunities – meaning at the end of the recruitment campaign you may be offered a similar role at a lower grade.
