Operations Manager – Chemistry Teaching Laboratory

Are you an organised and proactive operations professional with experience in a scientific, laboratory, or technical environment? We are seeking an Operations Manager to play a pivotal role in supporting the successful delivery of undergraduate practical chemistry teaching within our state-of-the-art Chemistry Teaching Laboratory (CTL).

The CTL delivers practical chemistry teaching to over 540 undergraduate students each year, supported by a dedicated team of academic, technical and professional services staff. This is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of a vibrant teaching environment, where you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of our facilities, systems, people and processes.

About the Role

As Operations Manager, you will lead the operational and administrative functions of the CTL, working closely with laboratory leadership, academic staff, technicians, professional services colleagues and students. You will oversee budgets, procurement, timetabling, recruitment processes, communications, facilities coordination and operational planning, while also line managing a member of the support team.

You will be instrumental in developing efficient processes, supporting the use of technology and systems, maintaining compliance and health and safety records, and contributing to an inclusive and supportive environment for staff and students.

About You

You will bring:

Experience delivering operational support in a laboratory, scientific, technical or similar environment.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Experience supervising or coordinating the work of others.

Confidence managing budgets, monitoring expenditure and maintaining accurate records.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across a wide range of stakeholders.

A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to fostering a positive working culture.

Experience in higher education, facilities management, or supporting undergraduate teaching would be advantageous but is not essential.
