About the role

Primary Objective

As a Senior Controls Design Engineer, provide technical support to the project delivery teams by carrying out processes and tasks as assigned by the associated project lead or project manager. The Senior Control Systems Engineer will be involved in technical delivery of projects, including design (software & hardware), development, commissioning, and verification, validation activities as directed by the project manager.

Key AccountabilitiesSales & Marketing

Major Activities

Assist with the preparation of tender and quotation responses

Evaluate suitable solutions aligned to the segment, technology, and core technical competencies

Work with Account Managers as directed to identify and evaluate new opportunities within existing and new markets

Communicate identified potential opportunities to Account Managers and sales leads

Project Delivery

Major Activities

Lead development of PLC, SCADA, and HMI solutions utilising vendor-agnostic automation platforms

Assist with the development of reference designs and tested/validated design architectures to support project delivery methodologies

Share technical knowledge with project delivery teams across regions to develop accurate segment-specific solutions for customer requirements globally

Share experiences through technical retrospective/feedback sessions to improve operational effectiveness of delivery teams

Maintain awareness of project and task budgets (man-hours for design, documentation, programming, installation, and commissioning effort) to ensure scope is delivered within allocated financial and schedule constraints

Develop proof-of-concept (POC) lab setups for internal training of junior engineers and customer engagement purposes

Work closely with bid managers to mitigate technical risks in opportunities

Perform FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities on site to meet customer and project requirements

Execute tasks related to the technical scope of projects in delivery

Technical Assistance

Major Activities

Provide engineering advice and support to resolve technical issues

Work with assigned project teams to develop engineering solutions that meet customer requirements

Provide on-call services and maintenance support via call-out roster for SLA customers

Travel to customer sites as required to support project discussions, site investigations, audits, and develop cost-effective solutions under guidance of lead engineers and project managers

Provide input into optimisation of existing deployed solutions during upgrades or as requested by customers

Build and maintain effective working relationships while balancing multiple stakeholders

Perform site commissioning of control systems where quality, reliability, and performance are key KPIs

Build working relationships with service delivery site staff through system assessments, implementation of improvements, and ongoing support

Engage with engineering colleagues to further develop technical capability

External

Build working relationships with clients to ensure successful project delivery within defined constraints

Respond to customer requests in consultation with senior engineers, project managers, and operations managers

Support clients by understanding their business needs and drivers

Provide technical support and advice related to project delivery and emerging technologies within scope of qualification and experience

Knowledge, Skills & ExperienceEssential

Tertiary qualification in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Automation, or related discipline

Australian Driver’s License

Right to work in Australia

Experience in designing, developing, and diagnosing PLC, RTU, HMI, SCADA, and network systems

Hands-on experience with SCADA systems such as Ignition, Siemens WinCC, Schneider EBO & PME, Tridium

Experience in control system design, including hardware/software requirements and documentation

Ability to interpret requirements and produce Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Interface Data Tables (IDT), IO summaries, cable and termination schedules

Experience in risk and safety assessments for hazardous areas installation and commissioning

Self-starter with strong customer service orientation

Proactive in safe work practices

Ability to manage competing priorities

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Systematic problem-solving approach

Desirable

Qualification in Electrical, Power Electronics, Instrumentation, Automation, or related trade background

Experience delivering projects in sectors such as data centres, concrete, food & beverage (breweries/distilleries), smart buildings

Exposure to multi-vendor PLC/SCADA technologies

Understanding of electrical design and requirement interpretation

Relevant industry certifications

Physical Requirements of the Role

Office-based work

Site work including audits, servicing, installation, and commissioning

Travel by car
