Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
About the role
Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) – MAT/Suboxone Provider
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for assessing clients for substance use disorders, including dependence on illegal and controlled substances, unmanaged medical conditions, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Based on the assessment, the NP will provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including prescribing and managing buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone), to reduce harm associated with opioid use and support reduction or cessation of opioid-related symptoms.
The PMHNP will work collaboratively with the OHH/MAT team to coordinate comprehensive patient care, including connecting members with primary care providers (PCPs) for medical needs, facilitating access to behavioral health services to address community and social support needs, and referring patients for psychiatric evaluation and medication management when clinically indicated.
The PMHNP is responsible for reviewing and documenting Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) reports in accordance with facility policy. PMP reports must be reviewed at intake and at least monthly when prescribing Suboxone or any other controlled substance. Documentation of PMP checks must be maintained in the patient chart and tracked through MD Toolbox. Additionally, PMP reports must be filed in the patient's record at least once per quarter, consistent with facility requirements for opioid addiction treatment services.
The PMHNP must be proficient in ordering, reviewing, and interpreting laboratory results; administering injectable medications; and obtaining and documenting vital signs at a minimum of annually, or more frequently as clinically indicated.
Additional responsibilities include collaborating with external healthcare providers and pharmacies, completing prior authorizations, supporting patients in achieving their treatment goals, and maintaining accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation. The PMHNP is expected to effectively manage daily tasks and documentation requirements while ensuring compliance with regulatory, organizational, and clinical standards.
