The Role
The Vision Applications Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting global machine vision applications, scanning technologies, and standards. This role requires deep expertise in current vision systems, awareness of emerging imaging trends including AI, and hands-on ability to solve complex vision system challenges. The position also plays a key role in leading and maintaining global machine vision standards across manufacturing.
What You’ll Do
Support vision applications across manufacturing centers and execution teams
Review manufacturing system requirements and design robust vision applications
Create and document scalable vision applications for error proofing, robot guidance, and part quality
Partner with manufacturing engineering teams and regional execution teams to gather requirements and improve solutions
Interface with vision equipment and integration suppliers
Develop vision system hardware and software designs, including devices, power distribution, I/O networks, software, and cost estimating tools
Ensure designs comply with GCCH, GCCS, and Global Robot Standards
Supervise contractor detailed designs when needed
Specify vision system components, functional requirements, and integration methods
Evaluate and validate new vision technologies for manufacturing use
Provide on-site and remote support for startup, troubleshooting, reprogramming, diagnostics, and plant vision issues
Develop training and documentation for global deployment of standard vision systems
Educate regional execution teams on standard vision applications
Partner with execution teams and vision SMEs to strengthen GM’s competitive advantage in vision and imaging systems
Investigate industry trends in vision AI and emerging technologies
Ensure cyber security requirements are included in vision system components
Develop vision applications to support virtual manufacturing
Support R&D and IT teams in developing custom GM applications
Work with suppliers to identify cost reduction opportunities
Coordinate and support manufacturing lab initiatives, proof of concepts, and pilot deployments in labs and plant facilities
Provide status updates to management
Mentor students and new hires
Drive systemic issues, lessons learned, and closure actions to completion
Occasional travel is required within North America and globally to OEM and plant sites
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field
Extensive technical knowledge in machine vision
Strong technical knowledge of robotics, AI, and automation processing
Extensive experience with Zebra (Matrox), Keyence, Photoneo , or related vision technologies
Experience developing and integrating vision applications
Ability to troubleshoot complex vision-related issues
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage multiple complex assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability
Ability to provide technical direction, mentoring, and project leadership
Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and drive continuous improvement
Demonstrated initiative and strong individual technical contributions
Proven project management skills and ability to teach others
Preferred Qualifications
AIA Certified Vision Professional (Basic or Advanced)
Experience with additional vision technologies and suppliers
2–3 years of plant assignment experience
10+ years of experience in the design, build, and startup of manufacturing systems
Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning
Experience with manufacturing and industrial automation including material-handling systems, AMRs, cobots, and virtual commissioning
Understanding of plant floor operations and product design manufacturability
Global project experience across regions
Programming knowledge in C++ and Python
Experience with ROS/ROS2
Familiarity with NVIDIA Isaac , Omniverse , or similar 3D/manufacturing simulation environments
Familiarity with Teamcenter , Siemens Technomatix Process Simulate , or similar tools
Ongoing development of technical expertise
