You will be a key member and cultivate your skills in a high-performing Corporate & Capital Markets team, working alongside leading lawyers, paraprofessionals, and legal support professionals within one of Canada’s premier full-service law firms.
In this role, you will report to and support a top-tier lawyer known for delivering practical, business-focused advice and leading complex, multi-stakeholder transactions. You will collaborate closely with the lawyer’s Executive Assistant to ensure seamless coordination and efficient management of priorities. The work spans sophisticated corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, financings, joint ventures, and strategic mandates with a focus on the broader public sector, offering exposure to high-impact, fast-paced work with BLG’s key clients.
As a Specialist, Legal Operations, you will provide strategic and operational support across the full lifecycle of client matters, enhancing the team’s ability to deliver exceptional service. You will play a central role in coordinating workflows, managing competing priorities, and driving process improvements that increase efficiency and consistency in service delivery. This strategic role requires focus, flexibility, and initiative, as well as strong project management and relationship-building skills. By developing a deep understanding of the team’s key clients, priorities, and business processes, you will enable seamless execution and contribute meaningfully to the continued success of the practice.

The key responsibilities of this role are:
Practice Management and Operational Excellence
Provide exceptional service and detail driven practice coordination consistent with BLG’s client service standards.
Understand all aspects of a legal matter lifecycle and the various internal business functions and processes that facilitate a matter through completion.
Liaise between the practice and all business functions including legal operations, pricing, matter opening & conflicts, and finance (billing, eBilling & collections), to provide efficiency, facilitate communication, and build relationships.
Apply project management skills to manage and monitor key client matters and practice group workflow, including tracking key deadlines and dependencies, ensuring matters are completed on time and on budget.
Demonstrate professional presence in all direct key client interactions including client meetings coordination, preparing client reports, triaging and responding to client inquiries related to matter management and key client terms.
Leverage legal technology to maximize workflow productivity and client service, ranging from monitoring metrics through Iridium to using budget management software and understanding eBilling platforms.
Contribute to business development efforts, including travel support and coordination of key stakeholder meetings as needed.
Commercial Excellence
Act as commercial manager of the Corporate & Capital Markets portfolio for all activities related to account and matter set up, key client terms adherence, time recording, billing, eBilling, and collections.
Manage key client Outside Counsel Guidelines, distribute key terms to broader legal team and serve as a gatekeeper to ensure compliance.
Work with Legal Operations team to support the scoping and budgeting process, and develop and implement matter plans where required.
Coordinate the intake of new clients and matters including liaison with the conflict team managing this process, input of fee arrangements, and set up of electronic billing processes.
Work closely with finance teams to ensure seamless billing for key clients and clients with specific billing requirements to adhere to client guidelines and reduce eBilling rejections.
Collaborate with the relevant business functions for account management such as rate renewals, fixed fee development, resolving issues with rate and invoice rejections, or tracking payments and managing collection of overdue accounts.
What you will bring to this role:
Post secondary education in business or legal studies.
Project Management or Legal Project Management Certification, an asset.
Experience working in a Law Firm or applicable transferable experience in professional services roles in law, project management, or finance.
Experience or knowledge related to a Corporate & Capital Markets practice.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work with key stakeholders at all levels.
Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel. C-suite experience also beneficial.
Strong aptitude for learning emerging technologies in legal technology and data management, staying current with industry trends.
Superior organizational, meticulous attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Ability to develop strong strategic/financial analysis skills.
Proven project and time management skills and ability to multi-task and manage a variety of concurrent projects.
A strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.

The expected salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000, depending on level of experience, region/location, and other factors.
