Mechanical Engineer-Data Center Cooling Solutions Architect
About the role
AWC is seeking a Mechanical Engineer – Data Center Cooling Solutions Architect to help develop and scale our capabilities in data center cooling and modular automation systems. Our team of co-owners values enthusiasm, creativity, and a growth mindset, and we’re committed to putting those qualities to work on solutions that matter. If you’re ready to grow and make an impact, we’d love to be on your team.
AWC helps industrial and critical infrastructure customers improve performance through automation, controls, power, instrumentation, and engineering support. We are building a focused capability to support the fast-growing data center market with modular, practical solutions that improve quality, responsiveness, support, and cost.
This role will bridge the gap between customer needs and AWC’s automation, controls, and project delivery teams. You will research target accounts and typical applications, develop account-specific Basis of Design concepts, define typical mechanical scope and interfaces, and help translate cooling-system requirements into practical automation and controls opportunities.
You will work closely with automation applications engineers, project managers, business development leaders, and supplier partners to create modular example designs, typical I/O and scope assumptions, and proof-of-concept packages that support customer workshops and business development efforts.
This is an ideal role for an engineer who combines strong mechanical aptitude with curiosity, commercial awareness, and a desire to help customers move faster from concept to execution.
How you’ll make an impact:
Research target accounts, market segments, and common data center cooling applications using internal knowledge, supplier input, and AI-enabled research tools
Develop account-specific and segment-specific Basis of Design concepts for cooling-related systems such as liquid cooling, cooling skids, pump packages, chiller interfaces, heat rejection systems, and related mechanical infrastructure
Define typical system scope, operating concepts, instrumentation needs, valve applications, and controls interfaces
Partner with automation applications engineers to translate mechanical systems into:
controls narratives
I/O concepts
PLC/HMI architecture assumptions
packaged automation opportunities
Help create modular example designs with typical scope, lead times, and budgetary cost assumptions to support customer-facing discussions
Support the creation of proof-of-concept packages used to secure workshops with engineering and project management decision makers
Participate in customer discovery sessions and workshops to understand goals, pain points, standards, and project constraints
Help identify opportunities to improve customer value through better design, standardization, sourcing, build strategy, and lifecycle support
Organize and continuously improve an internal AI-enabled knowledge base for target accounts, typical applications, and reusable design patterns
Coordinate with project managers, suppliers, and internal SMEs to ensure concepts are realistic, buildable, and commercially relevant
Support business development efforts with technical insight, application guidance, and customer-facing credibility
Skills you’ll need:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
5-7 years of experience in mechanical systems, thermal systems, process cooling, HVAC, packaged equipment, fluid handling, or related industrial applications
Ability to understand and discuss pumps, valves, heat exchangers, chilled water systems, liquid cooling systems, or similar mechanical/process systems
Strong communication skills and ability to work across engineering, sales, and project teams
Ability to translate technical concepts into practical, customer-facing solutions
Strong analytical and organizational skills
Willingness to learn and use AI-enabled tools for research, design support, and knowledge capture
Here’s what will set you apart:
Experience with data center cooling, mission critical infrastructure, liquid cooling, chiller plants, or modular skidded systems
Familiarity with controls, instrumentation, automation systems, or electrical/mechanical interfaces
Experience supporting customer-facing applications engineering, estimating, or proposal development
Exposure to BAS, PLC/HMI systems, instrumentation, or valve applications
Experience building standard designs, templates, or reusable engineering content
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is a plus, but not required
The Rewards:
Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
401(K) Match
Competitive Pay
Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Package
Employer Paid Life Insurance
Paid Time Off and Holiday Pay
Career Development Opportunities
