Trainee Journalist
About the role
Reuters is hiring small group of trainee journalists from college campuses in Mexico City to join its newsroom on a one year training contract. This role is aimed at recent graduates who want to explore careers in journalism and gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, global news environment.
The trainee journalists will work as part of a real-time newsroom operation that plays a critical role in identifying, reporting and delivering breaking news to Reuters’ global audience. While most of the training and work will focus on real-time news monitoring and breaking news coverage, trainees may also be required to rotate into other newsroom teams within the bureau as part of the learning experience.
About the role:
As a Trainee Journalist, you will:
Monitor a wide range of sources, including social media, company announcements, regulatory filings, official statements, newswires and media websites to identify breaking news.
Help spot, assess and escalate major developments across business, finance, politics and general news.
Write headlines, alerts and short news updates quickly and accurately under tight deadline pressure.
Cover a broad mix of stories, from corporate earnings and mergers to natural disasters, accidents, policy announcements and other major global events.
Work closely with editors and reporters across regions and time zones, communicating clearly and effectively.
Meet high standards for speed and accuracy while remaining calm under pressure.
Learn and apply Reuters’ editorial standards and Trust Principles in all your work.
Receive structured training, feedback and coaching throughout the year to build core newsroom skills and news judgement.
About you:
We are looking for motivated, curious candidates with a strong interest in journalism. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
Fluency in both English and Spanish , with strong written and verbal communication skills.
A strong interest in news, current affairs, business, politics or global events.
Good news judgement and close attention to detail.
An ability to multitask and handle fast‑moving situations.
Comfort using social media and digital platforms as newsgathering tools, while embracing the use of new cutting-edge AI-enhanced tools.
A collaborative attitude and willingness to learn.
Individuals committed to working from office to ensure that they can learn in a hands-on manner from experienced newsroom colleagues.
Previous journalism or newsroom experience is helpful but not essential. Full training will be provided.
