About the role
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies-from the world's largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups-use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead.
About the team
Stripe Managed Payments is a new horizontal layer across Stripe's platform that enables businesses to delegate substantial operational complexity to Stripe. In this model, Stripe serves as the merchant of record, providing an all-in-one solution for software and digital-goods businesses that takes on global tax compliance and liability, handles fraud and disputes, delivers a conversion-optimized checkout experience, and owns post-sale consumer support.
We recently launched our general availability to significant market demand. The product is still at an early and exciting stage: the foundations are working, and the opportunity ahead is enormous. We're a relatively small, high-context team with outsized scope-Managed Payments touches Checkout, Payment Links, Billing, Tax, Connect, support, operations, and more.
What you'll do
As an Engineering Manager for Managed Payments, you will lead a highly motivated team building one of Stripe's most promising new product areas. This is a particularly high-leverage role: a significant part of the job is helping the team move quickly while raising the bar on execution, prioritization, communication, and cross-org coordination.
You'll partner closely with product and design to shape the long-term roadmap, and will drive alignment across a wide range of partner teams. Success here requires strong engineering leadership, but also sharp judgment about product, operations, and how to get many stakeholders moving in the same direction.
Near-term priorities include:
Self-serve growth and funnel optimization - Deepening integration with onboarding flows to maximize eligible user conversion and reduce funnel leakage
Local acquiring - Building a network of local Managed Payments entities to route traffic dynamically, enabling locally acquired transactions globally and unlocking meaningful auth, cost, fraud, and compliance benefits
Advanced billing - Supporting complex pricing strategies (token-based billing, upgrades/downgrades, async invoicing) to serve the needs of AI-native and high-growth businesses
Flexible checkout composition - Building more modular, customizable checkout components in partnership with our OCS teams, so users can compose their ideal Managed Payments checkout experience
Global funds management - Evolving how Managed Payments balances and moves funds globally, partnering with our Money Movement infrastructure teams to support international expansion
Ongoing quality and growth - Improving onboarding clarity, expanding support for local payment methods, enabling seamless migrations to and from SMP, and raising quality across disputes flows, tax management, and more
Looking further ahead, the roadmap includes expanding to support Connect platforms, enabling the product globally, and exploring emerging payment rails. You'll play a central role in defining what comes next.
Who you are
We're looking for someone with a demonstrated track record as an Engineering Manager who operates autonomously and has delivered impact across multiple teams or product areas. Specifically, you:
Have led engineering teams and cross-functional projects spanning multiple organizations, and have driven results in complex, ambiguous environments
Operate with a high degree of autonomy - you set direction, identify gaps, and move the work forward without waiting to be told
Bring strong domain expertise: you are technically credible, stay close to your team's systems and decisions, and can hold a high bar for both product quality and engineering craft
Know how to hire, coach, and grow strong engineers - you are an active, hands-on contributor to building your team and treat recruiting as a core part of the job
Have strong product and operational judgment - you're comfortable working at the boundary of product, platform, and operations, and can make high-quality decisions with imperfect information
Foster a high-velocity, high-trust environment - you drive toward clear decisions without endless debate, and earn the confidence of your team and partner teams
Can balance speed with rigor in a space where mistakes have real user impact
Are located in New York City, or are willing to relocate
